About James

I love to see my students grow their skills week by week. Music brings so much richness to life and it also is a wonderful activity for our brain health.

It is never too late to study a musical instrument and studies show music lessons are a great way to increase relaxation, concentration, mental health, overall cognitive function and a sense of accomplishment. Not to mention they are fun.

I have had such great experiences in my years of teaching. Trained as a classical pianist and studying jazz guitar and voice, growing up with great popular music and absorbing my parent's passion for the big band and swing music of their day has given me an encyclopedic appreciation for good music. Being able to share the discovery of making music from multiple sources is my life's calling.

I relate to people and tailor my teaching according to each student's personal goals, age, skill level and interests.

Many of my students have performed at the highest levels and received outstanding and 100 point ratings at numerous NYSSMA solo festivals. Festival participation is completely optional nonetheless; I allow students to choose whether festival participation is right for them.

I have been helping students of all ages and levels reach their goals for years, whether playing or singing advanced music or playing and strumming their favorite songs for themselves, family and friends.

In addition to years of experience as a private teacher of all ages and levels, I have had a successful career as a NY state certified music teacher, teaching countless students from grades 1-12. I have been selected as an All County Choral conductor as well as an All County pianist numerous times. I have also developed a successful Adult Education guitar course through our local school district.

After studying music in college, I began teaching privately and discovered the joy of bringing music to people through teaching.

I have always been a performer but teaching has been my career and I have a passion for sharing the fun, creativity and beauty of music and all it's mental and spiritual benefits with my students.

I hold a BA in Music and a Masters in Liberal Studies from Stony Brook University as well as 90 graduate and in service credits inclduing Orff certification.

I am a NY state certified music teacher.

About the lesson

I determine their age and if they have had prior lessons on this or other instruments.

I bring materials that are appropraite for where they are and begin a weekly schedule.

I have taught youngters as young as 6 and students in their 70s. I have taught in school classrooms, my private studio as well as in group adult instruction.

Look for a teacher who is

My rates are standardized for students within a certain travel radius.

When students are further away I charge a small addition to my rate for travel time.
