About Art

Art Linton teaches beginning and intermediate folk, rock, pop, country and finger-style blues guitar. He has been playing guitar and singing for over 40 years. He owns at least 15 guitars, a number of amps and has a home recording studio. He plays harmonica and lap dulcimer as well.

He is also an adjunct faculty member at Georgia Gwinnett College, where teaches undergraduate World Religion classes. He worked as a staff member at Emory University for over 18 years and at CNN Headline News as a writer and associate producer for four years.

Art is a songwriter member of ASCAP and a member of Georgia Music Partners (GMP), a music industry advocacy group.

One of Art’s favorite and most memorable performing experiences was opening for John Prine at The Georgia Theatre in Athens, Georgia with fellow singer/songwriter and guitarist Mike Robinson. Another memorable experience was winning the “Open Mic Shootout” at Eddie’s Attic in Decatur.

Art has also performed with several highly regarded musicians in Atlanta, including Andy Browne from The Nightporters, record producer Frank French from early Drivin’ N’ Cryin’ (French produced Kevn Kinney, Michelle Malone and Indigo Girls), songwriter and recording artist Mary Delaney and bassist David Hewitt from the British rock groups Humble Pie and Babe Ruth. He has also worked with Athens record producers David Barbie (Drive By Truckers, Mercyland and Sugar with Bob Mould) and John Keane (R.E.M., Widespread Panic, Robyn Hitchcock, Indigo Girls).

Art loves all kinds of music from classical to bebop jazz, to punk, new wave and country. But his favorite styles are hard and alternative rock, rock and roll and folk rock. His biggest musical influences are Elvis Costello, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Van Morrison, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones and James Taylor.

Art’s hobbies include guitar, singing, songwriting, recording music, working on old cars, reading, computers, gourmet coffee drinking, and wine tasting.

“I want to encourage my students to develop a "good ear" for playing music. The secret to becoming a good musician is in learning to listen and in using your ears well. Learning to hear and feel the music you are working with is the goal. Your ears are your best and most important instrument.”

The only way to learn to play guitar is starting with “beginner’s mind” by doing, trying, making mistakes, not getting discouraged and not giving up. "Mis-takes" are just that: you only “missed the first take”. So, take a deep breath, then take a few more until you get the right take that feels right, just like in the recording studio. A strong desire to learn plus determination to play and practice every single day will get you to the goal of eventual mastery. Practice makes perfect!

“None of my students have won awards but they have fun playing the songs that I taught them. Let’s don't forget that music should be fun, not torture. There's a reason it's called "playing music." It should be "serious" play, but still fun, light-hearted and joyful.”
