About Merle

As a student and practitioner of music. I can help pass the torch to beginners and intermediate musicians. Music isn’t hard to grasp. It’s just new information that can be picked up quickly. Its personable and a very valuable tool to reach across any barrier. Come talk music with me.

its not really work if you love doing it! Music pushes me to failure every time I play! And its at that point that I learn a new technique on how to overcome the challenges. I say Im a student however Ive been playing since I was 4. Im 49 now with 5 records under my belt. Music is my life blood. It saves me daily.

It’s something ive done off and on for 30 plus years. Recently I was asked to teach a few people Kids and adults alike, so Ive picked it back up. Its fun and it gives me an excuse to play and share in the musical community.

Mainly self taught, the more I play the more I learn. Its awesome! like a self licking Icecream Cone! Performing music has been in my family for 4 generations. Im a distant cousin to Glenn Campbell. My Uncle has played with Willy Nelson, Weylon Jennings, Johnny cash, And a lot of other artists. I grew up around it. Grandmother sang and danced with Marty Robins. great grandmother played piano.

Currently Im writing a book on music theories to keep things simpe for my self and if it helps someone else then all the better. Its not hard it’s just new.

About the lesson

After introductions and business has been taken care of I find out the following

Who Influences them to play music?

What types of music do they enjoy listening to and what types of mediums have they tried to learn from?

When can they fit the lessons into their schedule?

Where do they practice?

Why did they chose this instrument? Is it to relax at a camp fire?, just noodling around at the house? Or are they wanting to join or create a band?

How much time to they have to dedicate to it? Per day/perweek?

These questions will help me get a better focus on how to procede with a lesson plan.

Ive taught Students of all ages. Kids as young as 7 and adults as old as 60 plus years old.

Ive taught and held clinics about Rock, country, blues, punk, heavy metal, and a very light touch of jazz rhythms and classical. Almost full spectrum.

Its a new language their learning. Its not hard it’s just new! And its fun! Music is very personal and personable! Its soothing and invigorating.

They need to have patience and understand that sometimes grasping the motorskills and concepts of music sometimes wont happen immediately. Those AHA moments can come from anywhere at anypoint. Have patience and remember that its fun.

The teacher should make you feel comfortable, empowered and enlightened! You got this!

My band Black Valentine is about t release our 4th album. Im superexcited about that! The last show I played, the crowd kept askign for encores after 4 hours of playing! Any excuse to play my guitar or my bass is a good excuse! And my last student! One day very soon he's going to get to actually share a stage with me! To see him come from no knowledge to playing modern and classic rock like second nature is awesome to see! Im really proud of him

Details

I have a sliding scale system I use depending on who goes where. I charge a Fee of $50 if I travel to my student and a $30 fee if my student comes to me. And its more by the session vs the hour. Typically a really good session runs for about an hour and a half and sometimes longer. I play the longer 90+minutes sessions by ear. Money isn’t necessarily the factor! Learning, growing and sharing in the musical journey are!
