About Dawoud

My approach is to show my students how to define their own musical goals and achieve them. I help my students find and develop their individual musical voices, and develop the technique and concept to realize it.

I also teach bass guitar, Indian sitar and dilruba, and music theory.

When I was 16 years old, a few friends asked me to teach them. So I did!

For two years I was a guitar teacher at LoDuca Brotehrs Music in Milwaukee. I was also a guitar instructor at the Bronx School of Music and Art, and a substitute guitar instructor at the Harlem School of the Arts.

I have been offering inetrmittent guitar, bass, and sitar lesson privately for many years.

I began playing guitar in 1971. I studied jazz guitar under the late George Prittchett (formerly with Buddy Rich), Kelvyn Bell (formerly with Roland Shannon Jackson, Arthur Blythe, and Decoding Society). I have attended master classes with Pat Martino and Dr. Yusef Lateef.

My training in sitar and Indian raga includes studies with Jeff Slatnick (former student of Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan), Shaheed Parvez Khan, and Michael Harrisson (formerly with Terry Riley and Pandit Pran Nath).

About the lesson

First, I determine what the student already knows (beginners welcome!). Then I find out what the student's goals are. If he / she is undecided about this, I will assist in this process. Then, we begin to accomplish this. Each person is unique, and each person has his / her own way of learning. I focus on what the sudent wants to achieve, and how to achieve it.

I work with beginners, intermediate and advances students. I can tailor my approach to most genres.

First, get a good instrument (if you don't already have one). Then decide what you wish to achieve: specifically, what kind of music you wish to make. It's OK if you are as yet undecided, or if your goal change. But determination is vital. You will want to know that mastering your instrument is what you want to do.
