About Stephen

I teach in a variety of styles:

jazz, rock, blues, acoustic guitar, solo guitar.

For over 10 years I have been on the jazz faculty at Montclair State University. I have taught privately for 35 years. I design lessons to address the needs of each student individually. I love teaching.

I'm very active on the NY freelance scene. I play on Broadway, do studio work, jazz gigs, play with many singers, solo guitar, orchestral work.

Privately on my own and in the Community Division of The Hartt School of Music.

I have a bachelor's degree from Hartt School of Music, where I also taught in the jazz department for 3 years. I have a Master's Degree from Manhattan School of Music. I have been on the jazz faculty of Montclair State University for over 10 years. I've been teaching privately for 35 years.

About the lesson

I try to understand what a student wants to learn. We discuss certain directions and goals that the student has. I may make suggestions as to songs or pieces to work on. I'm very open to concerns or problems the student wants to address.

I use a combination of learning songs from recordings, sheet music or simple teaching by demonstrating. I think playing together is beneficial and fun. I love all kinds of music.

Many types of students. Jazz , Rock, Blues, Acoustic Guitar, Solo Guitar. All ages and levels.

Talk to the teacher. Try a lesson. Try to be clear about what you want to learn and what direction you want to in. Go with what feels right.

On September 9 2017 ( this past weekend ) there was a world premeire of a film for which I wrote and performed the soundtrack. P.T. Barnum: The Lost Legend - at the Coney Island Film Festival.
