About Russ

I teach in my studio which is behind my house in the garage. I’ve taught music professionally for nearly 40 years. As a former school band director and an active performer, I feel that I can share my knowledge with all ages. I teach students on what they want to learn and need to learn their instrument. My goal is to help everyone become a better musician and have a better appreciation of music.

I hold a bachelor and masters degree in music education. I’m a member of PAS(Percussive Arts Society), and RGT(Registry of Guitar Tutors). I am a Nationally Registered Music Educator.

My biggest thrill in teaching is to see a student catch on to new concepts and new songs with that big smile that usually comes when they realize they can do it; make music. It doesn’t matter the age or experience level. Once that hurdle is completed, the rest of learning just falls into place.

Since the 9th grade, I realized I had a talent for music. I also enjoyed helping others. I felt that I would do well at combining the 2 and I believe I made the correct choice.

The following is in addition to my earlier statement on my qualifications

I began teaching while in high school. During my college years, I had ample opportunities to teach others and also teach at area schools. I’ve taught in Granville County Schools as a band director in grades 6-12. I continued to teach after retirement. I’ve helped at Kerr Vance and substituted at several schools. My private lessons have helped many people from ages 4-85.

About the lesson

I encourage parents to stay and visit my lessons. I like to visit a few minutes to get the awkwardness of first meeting underway. I listen to students and ask questions about their goals for their lessons. Together we form a plan to move forward.

I’ve worked with all ages( 4-90 years old). I’ve also worked with students with various learning difficulties. Please feel free to call and speak with any questions.

Look for a qualified teacher who teaches not to make themselves rich. Rather seek a teacher who puts you first during your time together. Pick someone who is passionate about what they do and want to share their know with you.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Be honest. Ask your teacher anything about the instrument you’re learning. If your teacher is giving instructions and you don’t understand, ask. The only bad or “stupid” question is the one never asked.

Details

My lessons are usually 30 minutes or one hour. Prices are $10.00 for 30 minutes and $20.00 for an hour. I don’t usually stare at the clock so if I happen to go over on your time, you don’t pay extra. If you have more than one student taking lessons, I do offer a family price.
