About Elizabeth

I retired August 2025 from teaching at the university level with a specialty in Middle Eastern and North African history, but most of my courses were global and comparative, as in WWI and the World (not just Europe and the Western Front) and comparing cities from the 1600's to today, starting in Asia, going around the globe, and ending up in New York City. I trained in political and intellectual history, found it a little too simple, added gender and ethnicity to the mix to make it more challenging, and later added history of medicine and military history to the mix. A veteran student told me I was one of the professors most trusted by veterans on a campus of 60K students. I might have teared up a bit at hearing that, and I’m a very tough and stoical sort of human, so yeah. That was big.

I also used to write questions for ETS, such as the AP exam, including world history, the SAT, and the GRE. I won the main departmental teaching award and several minority student recognition pins at my university, and have always had some of the most positive teaching evaluations in any department where I teach.

In grad school, I was the top-rated TA/preceptor at Princeton, and was an Assistant Master in their residential college system. My undergrad abd grad advisees at U of Cincinnati won top graduate fellowships at Georgetown, Penn, MIT, NYU, Chicago, and similar.

I love the challenge of helping different kinds of minds succeed, and chose to stay at a state school for just that challenge. It was bliss to learn how each student thought and coach each individual to success. I don’t miss committee meetings one iota, or the death threats for speaking from data and not politics or feelings about events in the region. I do miss those wonderfully diverse students!

I love seeing my students meet their goals and I work very hard to make it possible for them to achieve those goals, whatever their background. It was wonderful to teach in a public city university, because you never knew who would walk into your classroom and what kind of brain they’d have, and I could teach every course differently to reach each brain in the room. It's much more fun than when I was a teaching assistant and discussion leader at Princeton, because they had often been so thoroughly trained to tell the teacher what they think the teacher wants them to say. Public university students always surprised me with new angles on a topic and new questions. Fun! Who wants to stand at a lectern and read the same script the same way over and over and over again? Yaaaaaaawwwwwwnnnnn.

So, if you’re willing to put in the work and meet challenges starting at your level and getting progressively harder towards your goal, (think sprints and other drills for basketball, football, soccer, et.al.) let’s go!

As a teenager and then in my M.A. and Ph.D. studies.

I started helping my mother with her grading when I was 12, and also taught First Aid, lifeguarding, mountain climbing, and rappeling. Once out of college, I worked at M.I.T. as a pink collar work and trained clerical staff how to use this new thing called a computer after taking courses in that. To learn how to teach at the college and university level, I sat in on many professors' classes, took workshops, and then once a professor on my own, take continuing ed workshops in pedagogy and also technology. I have taught several online courses, and in these times of COVID, my students tell me mine are some of the most effective and user-friendly courses they are taking. That has me worried about what other professors are doing, frankly, since online teaching in times of COVID has its own specific parameters and contingencies to teach around, and I feel as though I'm just barely keeping up with best practices.

About the lesson

I haven't worked with one through this website yet, so have to talk about students I've worked with in many independent studies for last quarter century or so. I find out how they think, and what they want to learn, and then I work to develop a specific set of learning outcomes and strategies for achieving those outcomes.

Undergraduates and graduate students, and just one high school student so far, but that is very rewarding, so I'm curious to see if I can help students succeed through tutoring online.
