About Madison

I am an interdiscipminary tutor with a focus on history, art, and writing. My approach focuses on contexualization in order to improve memory, and working with the interests of the student to help them see how materials they find dry or boring can be made interesting. This naturally aids with memorization. I take a similar approach with my writing and English students, breaking down structure and looking at how each part of an essay contributes to the purpose and fulfills the prompt.

I am a current masters candidate in Material Culture at the Bard Graduate Center, and hold bachelor degrees in Art History and Economics. Prior to coming to New York I worked as a research assistant to American Historian Kathryn Kish Sklar in Berkeley for two years. Before that I was a private English tutor for advanced students, teen and adult, in Würzburg, Germany. I also assist with research papers and essays, and have helped students at Barnard, Smith College, and UC Berkeley, among others.

The thing I enjoy the most is seeing students connect to the material with which they previously struggled. I believe this connection is vital to comprehension and memorization. It is also, of course, extremely rewarding to see students excel in difficult topics and use the tools we discuss to succeed on their own.

It is equally important to think about the areas in which you excel and the topics that fascinate you as it is to discuss the areas in which you are struggling. This helps the teacher to frame the more challenging information in a way that is understandable and engaging to the student, thus aiding with both comprehension and memorization.
