About Duane
I want students to see that they are basically who their ancestors were in many respects. We are all Sumerians, Egyptians, Indians, Greeks, Romans, and the list goes on and on. They all have given us things that we use everyday as part of our lives. Just to see their faces when I explain how ancient rituals like Homecoming have come down to us gives me pleasure, or the "Wow I never knew that!" moment occurs is worth all the continuing years of study. I belong to two prfessional societies: the Association of Ancient Historians, and the Hallsted Group for Early Medieval Studies (focusing on the Anglo-Saxons).
It is the pleasure of seeing them respect the accomplishments of our ancestors and understanding their failures as well. History involves culture, eonomics, belief systems, philosophy and so much more. One can gain much wisdom for life by studying it. We have listened to recordings of ancient music, eaten ancient foods, studied ancient art and artistic techniques in my classes. We have even learned how a phalanx worked using cardboard shields and swords. We have had celebrations for Leif Ericksson, Mahatma Gandhi, been on field trips studying the local history of Cecil, New Castle and Chester Counties during the American Revolution (whih included a ceremony at the mass grave of colonial and British soldiers on the site of the Battle of the Brandywine).
I was taught by several gifted teachers in high school who excercised my intellect.
I have a Master's degree in Historical Studies, specializing in the Bronze Age and British Military (mainly army) HIstory. I also have 12 graduate credits beyond my Masters. These credits were mainly studies in ancient cultures. I got my Masters from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and also studied at Towson State University. My undergrad work was in British Lit. and that was from Lynchburg College, now Lynchburg University. I taught for 43 years: first at St. John's Literary Institute at Prosect Hall, and then for 41 years at the Jacob Tome Institute, better known as the Tome School. I also taught in the evenings at James H. Groves Adult High School in Wilmington, DE for 18 years, along with 4 years teaching summer school at Red Clay School District in Wilmington.

I initially like to talk with them about their hobbies, lifestyle, things they like to do, and then work from there, customizing their instruction. I then like to talk with them about why history is important and relevant, emphasizing the fact that who we are is based on who our ancestors were. I also always try to steer them away from any pseudo history they may have picked up from dubious tv shows and films. Finally, I work hard to gain their respect. I coached Cross Country for twenty years and my experience as a teacher and a coach has led me to believe that respect for the student as a human being is essential.
I have taught college prep students, adults with only rudimentary skills, middle school classes on occasion, and above average, and average students as well.
Don't look for a teacher who relies on a textbook. Look for someone who is willing to challenge some of what the textbook says. Look for someone who knows the truth and can prove it.
I enjoy historical reenacting, and recently attended a medieval festival in my full Anglo-Saxon warrior kit. I also got to see the Rolling Stones for the first time in my life.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
#1 How do you, the teacher approach your subject?
#2 How is my grade determined?
#3 How do I know that YOU know what you are talking about?

Mr Wirdel was my freshman and sophomore year history teacher. His comedic and lighthearted yet firm and caring style of teaching was a perfect escape from the monotony of…. most teachers you find in high school. The way he explains his topics, shares personal experiences, and makes sure every classmate is heard will never be forgotten and I HIGHLY recommend Mr Wirdel to anyone looking for a real, knowledgeable tutor.
Duane is a dedicated teacher with a passion for history. Before he taught history, he taught literature and made the work accessible. He cares about his pupils and their future success. His work in adult education further demonstrates his commitment to the profession and helping students to achieve their GED.
Mr. Wirdel is one of my favorite teachers that I had at any level of school. He taught us history with such an enthusiasm, which you could tell when he told stories about the different time periods. I know for a fact that his teaching is the reason that I enjoy learning about Greek mythology and Sparta, so much so that I plan to visit someday. On top of how Mr. Wirdel is a great teacher, he is a great man that cares about his students. Any time that I would visit my old high school after I graduated, he would be one of my first stops. Not only have I not met anyone who can make history come to life through story telling like Mr. Wirdel, but I also haven’t met many people who care about helping students more than Mr. Wirdel. He is a great teacher and a great man. I would highly recommend him!
What an amazing history teacher and overall mentor Mr. Wirdel was. He always made learning a subject fun and easy, more importantly in your brain developing years... memorable.
Passionate about history. Both ancient and modern. Varied and animated delivery that made the concepts stick for years to come.
A stand-out teacher of English who makes literature leap from its pages from Beowulf to Macbeth, thanks to his own passion—as I recall vividly
Mr. Wirdel is a great teacher! I took several history and literature classes with him in high school, and he made learning fun and engaging. He cares about what he is teaching and he cares about his students.
Mr. Wirdel was one of the greatest teachers I have ever had. He made me fall in love with history. He didn't just teach it but he made history something enjoyable for all and made it fun to learn .
Duane has always been passionate and deeply knowledgeable about his areas of expertise (history and music especially). He conveys information in an engaging, comprehensive manner, and truly cares about his students. He is a gregarious, thoughtful person who loves to connect with others.
Duane is laid back and easy to get along with. He is very passionate and knowledgable. I recommend working with him if you are looking for an experienced guide and someone to help you gain deeper understanding in your studies.
Mr. Wirdel made history fun and memorable. He is a consummate professional and great to work with.
He is the most knowledgeable person when it comes to the topics he covers. Passionate and caring are just a few words to describe the way he teaches
Mr. Wirdel taught me for 4 years, and he was by far one of the most knowledgeable, passionate educators I’ve crossed paths with in my education. He was able to balance being a friend, mentor, and disciplinarian to all students, and had much respect in the classroom. It’s very difficult to make education fun, but he accomplished it every day, and I continue to brag about him constantly to friends and coworkers.
I loved how everything was made into a story and he made all his students feel as though they can be their complete selves. He did not hold back in the classroom and therefore encouraged us to let it all out. My favorite part of his classes was the fact that we knew all of the things we learned came straight from his brain, he knew everything he taught by heart and hand wrote every test. I consider myself very lucky to have had Mr. Wirdel as a teacher
Mr Wirdel has such a passion for history, he always really inspired me and made the subject interesting. He also cares very deeply for each of his students which impacted me in high school. Would highly recommend as a tutor!
I've never met a teacher as passionate about history and his students as Mr. Wirdel. He always makes history fun and engaging, and genuinely cares about the success of his students. He has taught my whole family and they all loved him. Definitely recommend his new tutoring service for anyone who needs help with history! If you love music, he is great to discuss your favorite artists with as well.
his passion and his genuine love for teaching. Would never take any teacher over him for any reasons ever.
Mr. Wirdel is a one of a kind teacher. He is the type of educator that you can make lasting memories with both inside and out of the classroom. His passion for history is something that I will remember forever. He really makes the subject come to life!

Mr. Wirdel is a very knowledgeable teacher who can really immerse his students into the various topics he teaches. If you want a deeper understanding of something Mr. Wirdel is who you go to
I can solely thank Mr. Wirdel for getting me to want to learn about history when I was younger. He’s a fantastic teacher and as a former student who looked forward to learning from learning from him, I couldn’t recommend him more.
Mr. Wirdel was my favorite teacher in high school whether it was his crazy stories or his style of teaching. High school honestly wasnt my favorite experience by far but he made learning new things enjoyable and relatable to our classes in a way that kept us engaged.
He teaches with this incredible passion that makes you want to learn. He’s incredibly knowledgeable about the subjects he teaches, and is able to present them in a way that makes the topic easy to understand. But in addition to this, he cares about his students and their success.
Duane Wiesel is a true professional. He’s one of the best teachers I have ever known and makes learning fun.. He has a knack for developing a rapport with people of all ages and backgrounds. I highly recommend him!
Such a great teacher of history. He taught the material in the best way possible and always kept me engaged. Never a dull moment with Mr. Wirdel. Such a great teacher and an even better person
Mr. Wirdel is one of the most experienced and immersive educators that I’ve had the privilege of working with. The degree to which he demonstrates knowledge of the material is only outmatched by his enthusiasm for sharing it. A better match for Secondary Students and Undergraduates studying history, civilization, and culture cannot easily be found.
He is an amazing teacher! I've learned so much from him. He's a top notch educator!
Very knowledgeable teacher with a great rapport.
Duane has always loved history from the first I met him in high school! He would help everyone and anyone who was having trouble or just wanting to understand. This was not just limited to history but to English literature as well.
Duane can be counted on not only to teach but to make your students think, question and seek the answers.
He is an amazing individual that can only bring out the best in any person with whom he interacts.Mr. Wirdel made the material come alive. Best teacher I ever had.
Incredibly knowledgeable in multiple disciplines.
Makes the learning experience fun and exciting.Mr. Wirdel was my teacher in high school and he was great at what he did! He is extremely knowledgeable in all subjects. He always knew how to keep our attention/make the subject matter interesting while also helping us learn and preparing us for college.
As a former student, he really cared about those he taught and made sure we got the most out of the class. His teaching style helped me prepare for college!
Duane was always direct, patient and informed. He saw the potential and possibility in every student. He found a way to motivate each student and to recognize the gifts they brought to the table. As a colleague, he was always ready to listen and inspire.
Big personality, accommodating of all learning styles.
I love how much he respected his students and tried to foster strong relationships with them. History was never my best subject but he made the class enjoyable.
Mr. Wiesel was so incredibly intelligent and knowledgeable about a massive amount of history and it was truly a pleasure to be taught by him on the subject.
He got personality - he brings a lot to the table - I knew him 32 years ago so he might have lost a step, but i will never forget how prepared he was and knowledgeable about ancient history - Born to be a teacher and he delivered bigtime!
He is such an amazing person and a great teacher. He will always be my favorite teacher. He made class very engaging and made history fun when in years past I would struggle. He is an amazing teacher
Mr. Wirdel taught several of my classes in high school and was able to bring to life the history he was lecturing on. There was NEVER a dull moment in his classroom, but I'm now 28 and remember more from his lessons than nearly any other teacher I've ever studied under. Mr. Wirdel truly cares about the material he teaches, and he knows how to get you to care, too.
Mr.Wirdel is a wonderful man and teacher with a kind heart. Not only, does he have a passion for teaching, but he instills that love of history in every one of his students. Me, my aunt, sister, mother, and uncle all had him as a teacher and know that our best memories in school come from his class. He has a wealth of information about history. He was always there to have a discussion with students, including myself, who were intrigued by lectures. As a former student, I would recommend Mr.Wirdel a thousand times over again.
Mr. Wiesel was one of my most memorable and unique teachers, and the most passionate about what he is teaching. He loves history more than most people love anything and it is so inspiring. I will never forget all the knowledge I learned in my ancient history class where he was my teacher. He brought us into that period in every class session with his teaching style and I am so thankful I had the opportunity to be taught by Mr. Wirdel.
Mr Wirdel is the best teacher I ever had. I learned so much from him and I miss his classes dearly. He made such an impact on my life, and will forever be grateful for having him as a teacher.
I loved having Mr. Wirdel as a teacher my freshman and sophomore years of high school! History isn't my favorite subject, but he made the class interesting and engaging. I always looked forward to walking into his classroom and I hope he is able to teach on!
He was so knowledgeable about history and so passionate about working with us! He made everything fun and we could truly sense his love of the subject in class and in personal conversations. He was a great teacher and a friend!
I had Mr. Wirdel for two years of high school history. What should’ve been boring classes turned into some of the most interesting lectures I have ever attended. Mr. Wirdel gave me a love of history that I still enjoy to this day. I’m currently a college student and I wish that my professors could explain course material half as well as he could
He was an amazing teacher and gave me and many students a love for history and learning in general.
Mr. Wirdel was my teacher for 5-6 years and my cross county coach for 5 years also. He was/is the greatest teacher I have ever had. No college professor in my life has displayed the joy in the subject matter more than Mr. Wirdel. His depth of knowledge is extensive and I just can’t say enough about the influence he has had on my life, whether he knows it or not. Best educator ever.
Duane was the teacher who inspired my love of history. His passion for the subject has led to me and countless of his students to actively care for the various topics he covered. His humor kept his lessons interesting even when it’s a drier subject. He is my favorite teacher of all time, and I would highly recommend him. I felt extremely prepared for all my history-based college courses.
He is so knowledgeable about history. He can explain in terms that you can understand and even enjoy. He knows and tells the story behind the facts that make it memorable, even to teens.
Mr. Wirdel is an amazing teacher. He brings a very unique and special energy to his teaching style that is really unforgettable. His passion for subjects is infectious, so much so that I attribute my motivation for a study abroad in India to him. Could not recommend him more as a tutor!
He was so knowledgeable in our classes and displayed mastery of the subject in an enthusiastic way that made the information so interesting and fun to learn about. Can’t say enough about what a great teacher Mr. Wirdel is!
Mr. Wirdel was the greatest teacher who ever taught me. What better way to engage students than with comedy? The man is a treasure of a human being and endlessly funny- I remember being in middle school and all the kids would talk about looking forward to having Mr. Wirdel as a teacher in high school. When it finally came around, his kindness, humor, and passion for what he taught captured me and honestly everyone in his classes. He gave us such a great grasp on ancient history, and gifted us a love for ancient literature and the lessons it taught. There is no better teacher on this entire planet.
It seemed like I learned something new everyday. He taught me things about Vikings I never knew in a way that had so interested I started doing my own research. Just so we could trade info and insights he's a delightful kind hearted gentleman. He was even kind enough to draw me a character of my name and it's meaning in the old viking writing as a birthday present he goes above and beyond as a teacher and friend.
Mr. Wirdel is so knowledgeable and passionate about teaching. He made every lesson interesting, so that students wanted to learn. Because of him, ancient history has always been fascinating to me.
Duane Wirdel's ability to bring the subject matter to life through four years of literature classes is what made him my favorite teacher.
Mr. Wirdel was an excellent and passionate teacher when I had him during high school. He has a deep knowledge of history and a unique sense of humor. I always looked forward to his class.
he made learning fun and made me actually look forward to class.
He was my high school history teacher & this man made his passion for history my passion. Teaching wasn’t just a job for him; he engaged his students. He made me LOVE history class. It was the highlight of my entire high school career, to get to sit there and listen to how passionately he explained the subjects. He made learning fun, exciting, and never boring. He included all of his students in activities. Was very passionate about music and when the school held spirit weeks, he was ALWAYS showing his pride. Mr. Wirdel is a teacher that I STILL brag about to my colleges and friends; I use his teachings not only about history, but of philosophy. This man shaped my future and that’s exactly what teachers are for.
Duane always puts the student first. He loves teaching and its shows in the students.
Duane has always made learning fun and cares deeply about his students’ futures! One of the best teachers I’ve ever had.
He is an upbeat and professional person, who truly cares about his students and is passionate about his subject.
I was a student of Mr. Wirdel about ten years ago. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of ancient history. His lectures are informative and engaging. If you are looking for help with history or literature, do yourself a favor and work with Mr. Wirdel. Teachers like him are rare, and you may find that a subject you were struggling with becomes your favorite!
I took World History and other classes with Mr. Wirdel while he was a teacher at the Tome School. He has, without a doubt, been one of the most influential educators in my life. Mr. Wirdel has a way of infusing information with emotion that helps his students remember key facts and events effortlessly, as well as to think critically about what they have learned. To this day, I still think about the impact he had on the way I learn, process information, and communicate what I know to others. This is no traditional, dry educator. He ignites sparks and makes classrooms come alive.
As a student who wasn't particularly interested in history at first, I was not exactly excited to learn ancient history. That is, until I met Mr. Wirdel. He made history lively, vibrant, enamoring. I actually looked forward to history class. Without Mr. Wirdel, I wouldn't have been able to pass AP history exams and gain valuable credits for college. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to have Mr. Wirdel as my history teacher.
Mr. Wirdel's depth of knowledge in History & Music is inspiring all the way. His innovative teaching methodologies in class is what kept a day-dreamer like me engrossed in curiosity and rapt attention during his lectures.
Duane Wirdel is a truly exceptional teacher who ignites the imagination of his pupils and brings the subject to life in real time. Even beyond his passion, he is extremely knowledgeable about history and literature, with a depth of understanding that rivals any scholar I have worked with throughout all of my schooling. Put simply, Duane Wirdel is the kind of teacher that his students talk fondly about for the rest of their lives. He helped me draft a research paper on the historical Trojan War that remains one of my greatest academic works. Finally and perhaps most importantly, Duane Wirdel cares deeply about both the subject and the student. I cannot begin to count the times that he sat with me outside of class to discuss a historical or literary theme. At one point, I missed several weeks of class due to a severe concussion. Upon returning to school, I found many of my teachers were accommodating, but Mr. Wirdel went above and beyond, skipping his lunch break to help me catch up on the material. When I think of excellence in teaching, I think of Duane Wirdel.
Duane understands students’ gifts and their limits, and how to make them be courageous and do what they’re good at all the while gently pushing them to grow.
He is excellent at his work, very cooperative and a team player.
Mr. Wirdel was an amazing teacher. I graduated class of 2009, and since have gone back to school to pursue a higher education after trying to figure out exactly what I wanted. Mr. Wirdel’s lectures and teachings still resonate with me to this day. I read many great books in his class that I have attached lively lectures to in my head. I am now relearning some in college and there were books I didn’t even have to reread because I remembered them 12 years later. I was also very sick one school year and was hospitalized and then bed ridden. Mr Wirdel not only helped me catch up, but he was very accommodating and caring. I appreciate his knowledge, his humor, and his desire to see people succeed. Thank you for the many wonderful years in your classes!
Duane was a fine teacher of history and literature, particularly the history of the ancient Near East and of Greece and Rome. He had a deep passion for his subject, and did a great job of bringing that enthusiasm to his students. I took his classes over 30 years ago and he still stands out in my memory as a fine teacher.
Mr. Wirdel was a very personable and nice man. Easily one of my favorite teachers in my school journey he spent his days going on and on about his passion of history and his intriguing stories of his past jobs and life. I will forever love Mr. Wirdel.
Excellent teacher. Made English literature come alive for me.
As Mr. Wirdel’s student I was taught in a wide variety of ways and felt truly connected to what he was teaching. I learned so much from Mr. Wirdel and would definitely love to have him as a teacher again!
He was an amazing, caring teacher and was so passionate about what he taught. He is truly one of the smartest men I’ve ever met and is able to tell you anything you want to know about history off the top of his head. He was always willing to teach students in his off time by sparking an educational conversation based on thoughts and opinions, and made learning history and literature entertaining. Thank you for everything you have taught me Mr. Wirdel and good luck!
Duane Wirdel taught my son in 8th grade. He inspired my son to want to read more and learn more about the topics being taught. Duane’s passion was contagious. I highly recommend Duane Wirdel
Duane is an exceptional and engaging teacher.
He is so incredibly enthusiastic about his work that he makes any subject interesting to learn about. His kindness, understanding and patience is incomparable. One of the greatest teachers I’ve had the pleasure of knowing.
Mr. Wirdel was able to take subject matter that bored most high school students to sleep and make it interesting and something we could relate to. He also became a mentor to many of us throughout our entire high school careers and beyond that. I graduated over eleven years ago and can still contact him if I ever need advice or if I find an interesting history article to share with him.
His expansive knowledge and passion about what he was teaching.
I have never had such an expressive teacher who was so passionate. He was always so willing to share his personal interests too and made everyone feel like they belonged. It was an honor to be taught by him!
Mr. Wirdel is a wonderful teacher. He instilled in me a love of history and taught me how to think critically.
He was very passionate and helpful with his work! I learned a lot through him.
He was very thoughtful, kind, and caring! He makes learning enjoyable with his jokes but also teaches you how to manage your school work and helps you learn at the same time. He was and is always one of my favorite teachers definitely one to remember!!
Mr. Wirdel was the most effective and engaging teacher I ever had. He cares more about the material he’s teaching than any other teacher I have ever encountered. His classroom is one that truly came alive every lecture and he always tried to relate the material back to us.
Mr. Wirdel is easily the most memorable teacher I’ve ever had. He is a perfect mix of goofy and serious. He always loved joking around with our class but when it was time to get down to business, he spared no time. He was always very passionate about whatever he was talking about. From the Anglo-Saxons to The Rolling Stones, you can always depend on him to know it all. He has a great love for sharing his knowledge and inspiring people to reach their full potential.
One of the best teachers I’ve had so far. He kept us engaged and told the funniest stories. Never failed to put a smile on our faces. Thank you for all you did :)
His passion for history and literature and how he was able to convey it in such an interesting way. He is a fantastic teacher who absolutely changed my worldview and influenced my academic career.
He is incredibly passionate about the subjects he teaches which translates into a very engaging classroom environment, promoting good learning. Mr. Wirdel is also extremely personable and makes connections with students which constantly keeps them involved in the learning process while making it fun.
Mr. Wirdel taught history in the form of stories, rather than lectures. He added humor to the lessons; kids remember lessons better when they smile and laugh during them.
Mr. Wirdel was my history teacher in high school and he is my favorite history teacher of all time (and between grade school and college, I’ve had a few). Incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about any topic he taught, Mr. Wirdel imparted his knowledge onto his students in a way few teachers have, in my experience. Not only was he an excellent teacher, but he also truly cared about each and every student and was ready to talk with his students about anything, not just the school-related. Truly a once in a lifetime teacher!
He took the time to break down the subject matter so that it was interesting to me. He also seemed to genuinely care about me, not just going through the motions of a job.
He always thought out his answers to our questions thoroughly and delivered the material we needed to know in an interesting and fun way. He was always super willing to answer any questions we had and go more in to depth on topics to help us understand things.
Mr. Wirdel was the best history teacher I ever had. He was engaging, kind and so knowledgeable. He always went above and beyond to make sure his students understood the lessons.
Absolutely one of the best teachers I have ever had! I looked forward to going to his class every day.
He was an incredible history teacher and made learning fun.
He is helpful, knowledgeable, and fun! He is a wealth of knowledge in anything history or music. He will bend over backwards to lend anyone help or assistance. A wonderful human!
Duane was a colleague (and a friend) for many years at an elite Maryland private school with me, as well as a fellow alum of the University of Delaware. Over the years, I saw him truly teach and inspire the students fortunate enough to attend his classes, including my own sons. His knowledge, passion, and ability to make history “come to life” was unsurpassed and was evident each day in his class.
Mr. Wirdel brings a new life to any subject he teaches. His lessons are based on curiosity, wonder, and enthusiasm and he makes even the oldest and driest texts come alive. I enjoyed many years learning from him.
Mr. Wirdel was the best teacher I ever had in high school. Whereas most teachers will just hand homework or worksheets in order to "teach", Mr. Wirdel would bring a story to history. He was always easy going, but still very versed in his history lessons. I'm very glad to have had him as a teacher.
Mr. Wirdel is a fantastic teacher. He is always a wealth of information while being kind and relatable.
Duane Wirdel is the best teacher I have ever had and I now have a doctorate, so lots of teachers. He is wise and kind and truly cares about his students. His demeanor is what makes him an excellent teacher. He is a craftsman as a teacher and I could not recommend him higher.
He was such a kind and compassionate teacher for the two years that I had him. He made history fun and made me want to learn whenever I never really enjoyed it before I had him as my teacher.
Duane is caring, easy to talk to, and extremely knowledgeable. His passion for teaching history is second only to his genuine care for his students, regardless of their age or ability. It has been an honor to work with Duane for over 40 years.
Amazing teacher! Super knowledgeable!
His vast knowledge and experience and his passion for teaching was always evident. Duane was caring and his students loved him. As a colleague, he was always supportive and ready to lend a hand. He not only taught his students the subject matter, but also how to be a better citizen.
Awesomely amazing teacher.
Duane Wirdel is someone that I had the great fortune to have as a teacher in high school and a friend to this day, almost 30 years after I graduated. He was not only the best teacher I’ve known, but he inspired me very much and he is part of the reason I am who I am.
He has had this same impact on generations of his students. Anyone would be lucky to have him as a tutor or even mentor. I spent most of my life struggling with undiagnosed ADHD, and some classes were difficult for me. Never his though...I was always fascinated by anything he taught and the way he made it relevant to the present. I really can’t say enough here to do him justice.
He’s also just a great human being.
It’s rare these days to find someone that won’t teach you what to think, but how to think. :)
Was a wonderful teacher . His teaching is one of a kind but keeps you wanting to learn more. You wouldn't doubt his knowledge of anything. So glad I had the opportunity to learn from him !
I was a student of his at Tome School several years ago. Duane is a fabulous teacher that dives into the subject and brings it to life. I would highly recommend him and would want him to teach my own children.
Mr. Wirdel is an amazing teacher and person. His way of teaching makes learning fun & memorable. I'm thankful both myself and my daughter had the privilege of having him as a teacher.
Mr. Wirdel had the ability to break down the material we were covering in order for everyone to understand and retain.
Duane Wirdel is a wonderful and dedicated teacher. I had him for literature and worked with him on the yearbook. He truly cares for his students and makes the stories come alive. He takes the time to truly listen to his students when we had questions about the material or any subject we chose to talk about.
Mr. Wirdel is truly the best teacher I ever had throughout my entire academic career. His passion for history and teaching, which shone through in every class of his, made me fall in love with history and I looked forward to his class every single day. He wove ancient history into this wonderful big story of battles and conquests, and fights over love. I will never forget the things I learned and I am so grateful that I was able to have such a wonderful teacher. If you see this Wirdy - thank you, thank you, thank you!!! All my love.
Mr Wirdel is the kind of teacher to make the most boring topics fun and exciting. When I learned from him, he instilled in me a hunger for knowledge and to further educate myself beyond the classroom. Duane is my favorite teacher I have ever had the pleasure of learning from. Not just a good teacher, but a good man as well. If my son was old enough, I’d be having Mr Wirdel educate him. His lessons opened my mind and allowed to think on a deeper level, many of my classmates felt the same. I hope anyone reading this review sincerely considers the levels of educations and fun this man brings to school and learning.
Mr. Wirdel was an excellent history and literature teacher. His enthusiasm for teaching and exciting lectures made each class exciting.
Mr Wiesel taught me to appreciate literature And so very important life lessons
Always available to students and willing to listenExplained things in a way that was entertaining, so you’d want to learn more
He made learning relevant. He was able to engage am entire class of recalcitrant high school students to not only read tomes such as Ulysses and Shakespearian plays as well as more modern works, he had us making connections across genres. He also led us to constructive criticism, and never silenced a student for having an opposing view, in fact, he welcomed differing viewpoints. No one ever wondered "when will I ever use this?" Due to his instruction, I was able to skip a few college courses.
He has a fun, relatable way of presenting history and literature. He's the only high school teacher I had, that when I came back to the material 15 years later, I immediately remembered his lessons.
Respectful and engages with teen and adult students in an entertaining manner, making the subject much more fun and memorable. Excellent balance of high expectations and empathy. All around excellent teacher! Highly recommend.
Mr. Wirdel taught two of my children while they were at the Tome School in North East, Maryland. They both have very different strengths and personalities but Mr Wirdel managed to challenge, inspire, and motivate them both. My daughter took Ancient History, World History, and Ancient Literature with Mr Wirdel and my son took World History and Ancient Lit with him. I would highly recommend Mr Wirdel as an educator that goes above and beyond to understand what motivates each individual student and taps into that to inspire learning.
He was an innovative, personable, caring, engaging colleague!
Mr. Wirdel is a knowledgeable and effective teacher. He has a real passion for what he teaches which is passed along to his students. His teachings have stayed with me long after I was his student.
Mr. Wirdel was my favorite teacher my freshmen and sophomore years. Every lesson he taught, he taught with enthusiasm, which helped make seemingly boring subjects truly interesting. Not only was he an excellent teacher, he took the time to truly build a connection with each of his students. I was never afraid to come to him if I needed help on a lesson or felt I needed an extension for an assignment. Also, I was always excited to go to school everyone morning unlike most students because I got to look forward to Mr. Wirdel’s class. He truly is an amazing teacher and an amazing person whom is very missed.
Mr. Wirdel taughy me for four years. He truly brings History alive when he teaches it. Anything he teaches, he teaches with passion.
He made history fascinating. He added intriguing stories that fleshed out the bigger picture.
I was privileged enough to be taught by Mr. Wirdel in high school. As I finish my masters degree, I can still confidently say that he is one of the most engaging and knowledgeable teachers I have ever had in my educational career. He forms strong connections with students, delivers vibrant and detailed lectures, and truly invests in his students and their abilities to succeed in both academics and life. A truly wonderful teacher and person.
I loved that Mr. Wirdel always seems to know what he is taking about. He is very well educated and maked it very easy to retain information. He always provided extra help if a student needed it, and wanted the best for them and their education.
As a freshman, lectures were new to us but he made us remember each detail of the ancient world by his silly stories attached. He could tell side stories of historic figures or events that made it so much fun to learn about. Every student missed him when he was absent and even more when he left.
Mr. Wirdel truly has a gift when it comes to teaching. I was a middle schooler completely uninterested in history or school at all. I have horrible ADD and sitting still has never been for me if I’m uninterested. Mr. Wirdel made the material interesting, he never gave up on me, encouraged me, believed that I had the ability to apply myself and do well. He changed my views on history and made me want to learn. He’s one of handful of educators in my life that I consider to be life changing.
Mr Widel brought to life whatever subject he was teaching. He brings history and literature to life in a way that pulls you in and makes it real. He engages all of the students. He is a kind, compassionate, and patient teacher and friend. No student ever left behind. He has the intuition to identify a students struggle and is able to help them understand the material. He took the time to care.
His knowledge is vast and he is very personal when it comes to being there for you. He is loyal and extremely hardworking. Would work again with him a thousand times over!
Mr. Wirdel made learning both easy and fun! He made ancient history, and literature come alive because he’s truly passionate about what he’s teaching. Cannot thank him enough for the education I received!
He was a great history teacher. He was dedicated and very involved with his students! Truly an amazing teacher
Duane Wirdel's passion for the subject is bound to rub off on anyone who has the privilege to know him.
Duane has high standards and is a consummate professional. He is the history teacher who shows up for class in costume as a historical figure. He is the history teacher who took you on a field trip to see the spot where the British landed and where the Marquis de Lafayette was wounded. Duane brings the material to life--not just for his colleagues but for his students as well. I partnered with him on some joint teaching projects, and Duane is affable and easy to work with. He understands the importance of developing good relationships with his students and his colleagues. I give Duane my most enthusiastic recommendation.
His expertise lends to a truly unique learning experience. Learning from him over the course of 2 years was like hearing intricately interwoven stories of the world, and lent to a real, retainable education. His passion for his work is clearly evident, and translates into results.
A very dedicated teacher who knows his content and loves sharing his passion for history with his students.
Duane Wirdel is an inspiring, caring, and challenging teacher and mentor. I was a student of Mr. Wirdel from 2010-2012 and have fond memories of his classes. His lectures remain among my favorite I have ever heard. From the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome, to teaching the meaning and relevance of texts such as The Odyssey and The Epic of Gilgamesh, Mr. Wirdel captivated myself and my cohort. Furthermore, Mr. Wirdel has a great sense of humor and a kind soul that puts students at ease. He is easily one of my favorite teachers I have ever had the pleasure of learning from.

University of Mount Union, B.A (Magna Cum Laude), Class of 2018Mr. Wirdel is an amazing teacher! He is so passionate about the material he teaches and makes learning fun.
Mr. Wirdel was one of my favorite teachers and was one of the teachers who inspired me to go into education myself! He made me recognize that a teachers job is to instill a thirst for knowledge instead of making us memorize for the test. He stressed actual understanding of the content as opposed to memorization from a text. His passion for teaching and for the content made it more fun to learn. And of course, he’s hillarious which makes the whole experience much more enjoyable!
He was my literature teacher in high school. By far one of the best teachers I have ever had, through college and beyond. I still remember lessons learned from him!
