About Matthew

I started teaching when I began my PhD. I always enjoyed talking with others about things I had learned and that I was interested in, so I'd really say I've been a teacher all along. Officially though, it has been since August of 2017.

I will soon have earned a PhD. I have experience teaching for two years now. I have worked as a teaching assistant for three years. I have taught in person and online. I have at least six years of experience working in the industry. I have obtained certifications that pertain to my expertise. I have read many books and taught myself some subjects. Ultimately, my educational background and experience as an instructor make me qualified to effectively tutor students.

I start off by becoming familiar with the student. I ask them to assess their areas of strengths and areas where they need improvement. I try to triangulate this information with data from their parents as well as relying on other indicators, especially behaviors and assessment related outcomes like their grades. Behaviors could include frequency of reading, writing, coding, and in general studying.

Once I have identified some background information, I then have them tell me where they are at cognitively and emotionally regarding the reason for our meeting. If they are feeling down or upset, I reassure them and show some more patience. If they are more confident and driven, I tend to challenge them to reach the next level more quickly.

Ultimately, I look to develop a relationship with the student so I want them to feel comfortable asking questions if something isn't clear. I do try to keep things focused though so we can have a productive meeting. I also set guidelines in terms of my expectations as well as seek to understand their expectations. While they are the client I am the instructor so it is my job to command respect. With that said, I believe respect is earned when it is given, and thus, give them the respect they deserve in a manner that reminds them they are the student.

I have worked with a variety of students from undergraduates (18-22) to teenagers and students as young as 6 and 7.

I would say ask questions to make sure the teacher is going to be a right fit in helping you accomplish your goals. A brief 5-10 minute phone conversation or email or two should be sufficient in answering your questions. Also, make sure they feel invested in your development; you're going to get much more out of it if you find that person.

I recently had a student apply to a PhD program and she asked me to write a letter of recommendation, which I gladly did. She was accepted with a full ride.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
They should reflect on their goals and the outcomes they want to see. They should also be honest in self-assessing their strengths and weaknesses. If you don't give your teacher the information they need, it will be difficult for them to really help you.
