About Addison

Hi, I'm Addy Greenfeld. I'm new to tutoring professionally, but I have a substantial history of helping my brother and my classmates when they have some questions about math. I'm finishing up my junior year at Thomas Jefferson High School, and on the math front specifically, I'm finishing up AB Calc. Though I'm in much better shape now, math and I haven't always had a picture perfect history, and I know how it feels to struggle through concepts you don't understand. I learned that the most comfortable way to get out of a math rut was to get help from a kind older student, and I'm really excited to have this opportunity to pay it forward, so to speak, and to teach, encourage, and help with developing the skills it takes to be confident and proficient in math.

I like to work through concepts slowly, asking a lot of leading questions, and prompting a tutee to figure out their difficulties in a way that will boost confidence to work through any number of future problems. For example, if you asked me what three times three is, I could either tell you that it's nine, review fundamentals of multiplication with you through a grid of dots, or lead you into it by asking you simpler questions like three times one, and three times two, and allowing you to work out the pattern by the time we got to our original problem. I find all that it takes is a few sentences of congratulation and review whenever I go with the third method, at any level of math I have yet faced, and when I teach in this way, my tutee gets the excitement of realizing that they already have the ability to apply old skills in new ways, and I get to feel excited and proud at the same time.
