About Malia

I enjoy helping a student solidify their foundational math skills by allowing them to explore and experiment with math. This allows the student to take ownership of their learning, gain a deeper understanding of math, and hone their skills in preparation for Pre-Algebra.

When I worked as a Paraprofessional in Kindergarten, I saw how even young students would struggle with learning at times. I knew they needed help and loved helping them and seeing them succeed! I decided that I wanted to be part of the net that many tutors, teachers, paraprofessionals, and others make up to catch those students who fall through the cracks of schooling. Every child is capable of learning and succeeding. I want to help make that a reality for every student I meet.

I am a licensed K-8 teacher. I have worked two years as a Kindergarten Paraprofessional where I worked one-on-one and in small groups with students who were struggling. I did my student teaching in Laie, HI with a diverse student body with 6th graders. I taught for two years in Salmon, ID. I taught Kindergarten and Middle School Math.

The above experiences have given me the insight to see where elementary students start and where they need to be in order to be successful in Middle School math.

About the lesson

I have a conversation with the student about how they are dealing with math. I ask the student to tell me about his/her experiences in math, both good and bad. I ask the student what his/her goal is for math and for tutoring. From there I either give a short assessment of the student's basic skills or we begin with some of the work the student has. The student and I come up with a plan that will help the student reach his/her goal(s).

I have worked with a diverse range of students. Silly students to serious students. Reluctant to eager students. I have also worked with bilingual students (the students spoke Pigeon and English in Hawaii).

There is a difference between learning something for a test and really learning something. Make sure you and your teacher are focused on learning to understand and use the information, not just to pass a test and forget it by the end of the day.

One of my student's really dreads math and is always looking for ways out of it. I was quite concerned how much this student might be learning. However, when I saw the results of the latest in-depth assessment, the student had improved quite a lot!
