About Don

I'm in the process of acquiring my PhD in Structural Biology, Biochemistry, and Biophysics. I used to be a math teacher and am currently a biochemistry teacher at my University, so I have a good amount of experience teaching these subjects to students and have received a lot of positive feedback on my teaching style. My research background includes human stem cell research, cancer research (human neuroblastoma), computational biology, molecular dynamics, transgenics, traditional biochemistry (with a focus on mitochondria), and ab initio protein structure determination

My first teaching experience involved a 6-week module teaching high school science teachers around the county the basics of cell culture, how to make stem cell science more accessible to their students, and the importance of the scientific method. I have continued teaching consistently since then

I was a math tutor as high as calculus 2, a fundamentals of biology teacher, and am now a biochemistry teacher. My undergraduate degree is in biology with a focus on chemical engineering and I'm currently working on a PhD in Structural Biology, Biochemistry, and Biophysics. I'm an experienced programmer in python, C++, and bash, my research in the past has included human stem cell work, cancer research, computational biology with a focus on membrane-bound protein mechanics, and mitochondrial dysfunction. My gpa is currently a 4.0

About the lesson

My approach is different depending on the subject, but I will usually start off with a discussion about the days topic, where I go over the basics, but I make sure to solidify the reasoning for why something is the way it so that the student can remember based on logic (ex. PV=nRT, if you increase the temperature and keep everything else the same, those molecules are bouncing around with a lot more energy, they'll be hitting the walls of their container harder, and that means there's more pressure pushing out). Once a concept is solidified, I'll move on to practice problems, giving guidance where needed. From there, I have the student explain the concept to me as though they were the teacher (the best way to learn is to teach). For my college-aged students I don't give assignments outside of tutoring unless requested, I know you guys have busy schedules and enough homework already. I will also help with homework if needed.
