About Peter
It really came out of the blue. I come from a family of educators. My father was the Dean of Chemistry and professor at SUNY College at New Paltz. My grandfather also a Chemistry teacher. So, it was always in me. I am a firm believer in education and education has always been a strong driving force. I had numerous years of experience in small and large companies. I started realizing that a lot of problems we face in this country come from a lack of education. So, I decided to start teaching. At first at various tutoring companies and finally as a teacher at an Academy.
I have taken ESL training for a ESL certificate that taught all the fundamentals of teaching, teaching to young learners and adults, and classroom management. The class covered creating lesson plans, using various techniques for instructing, learning styles, approaching challenges in the classroom and so on.
I also was a teacher in a Academy in a typical classroom teaching Math and Science to grade and high school.
I have had numerous years tutoring Math and Science to all grade levels in numerous topics.
I have been enrolled at "RPI" in there Ph.D program, received a M.S. from "Georgia Tech", and a B.S. from "State University of New York at Potsdam" all in Computer Science.
I have written a book for Prentice Hall on a computer language and have years practical experience in industry.

Get to know the student and expectations: Ask about a child’s learning style. Do they learn better by seeing, reading, doing or listening? Ask about what they expect to accomplish during the sessions and what areas they want to concentrate on. “Good tutors need to assess a student’s needs and strengths so they know where to begin instruction. Then they should build a learning plan around those strengths and needs.”
Determine the student’s knowledge: I give students an assessment to evaluate their skills and understanding of the subject in relation to their grade level. I then devise a personalized work plan for getting the student where they need to be, or where they would like to go.
Make a positive impression: The first meeting sets the tone. “I want to make the student feel comfortable and learn about what motivates them. It’s all about finding their interests and incorporating them into their coursework.” Another way to put a child at ease, is to tell them about your own experiences and interests, letting them see you are a normal person, too.
Collaborate with the student on a plan of action: Incorporate the student into the lesson planning so they become a part of their own learning process. It’s also a good way to keep the lines of communication open.
I have worked with students of differing ages, from 4th grade all the way to first year college students. Students with differing learning styles, visual, by example, tactile ....
I have worked with students who have been challenged all there life, to ones who have experienced recent struggles.
I have tutored students from different countries to ones with different backgounds.
1. Know your goals.
What level of help do I need? Do I need homework help, intensive remediation, or something in between?
2. Do your diligence
Check credentials carefully. Ask questions to see how well your skills match your needs:
Oddly enough it just happened this week so it is fresh in the memory cells. I started tutoring a high school student who started in the first and second quarter was receiving D grades on all work. After a week tutoring him he received a 91 on his first exam working with him. Albeit not so common it was a real joy seeing the happiness and transformation that he showed.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Share your struggle spots. Let the tutor know what subjects are more difficult and think about study strategies or help with organizing time you might want. Then the tutor can go straight to the trouble area.
Bring in work you need help with: The best way to jump into tutoring is by having real work to do and real problems to solve together. Bring anything you need help with or want to advance on — whether it’s a homework problem or an upcoming test that needs immediate attention? Outlines are helpful if you need help on specific areas of an assignment or report.
Let your tutor get to know you: The more you communicate your personality, the more your tutor will understand how to work with you. Write down some likes and dislikes, whether it’s about school subjects, teachers or extracurricular activities. Tell the tutor about future college or career goals. Even young children have opinions on these subjects.
