About Joshua

I have tutored Math to children from 5 to 18 years old for the past 6 years. The power of private tutoring is the ability to cater lessons to each student students individual learning style. Everyone processes information differently and the teachers first and most important job is helping students work that out. I adapt my lesson plans depending upon the student, for example with my students who are visual learners I will utilize images to help them understand the subject material. I design the lessons in way that the student is always proactive, learning comes from doing and asking questions, not sitting passively trying to absorb information. I cater my exercises to each students interests, for example for my student interested in sports I will adapt the Math excises to be solving a sports related problem. I meet students where they are at in terms of learning style, knowledge, and interests. This helps students engage and develop a comprehensive understanding of the subject material.

I currently work freelance as computer coder at Evolving Technologies Coorporation so quantitive work is my life! I have a Bachelors of Arts from Vassar College where I took Math and Economics classes. I also scored 720 in the Math SAT. I have been using my knowledge in Math to tutor students from elementary to high school Math for 6 years.

About the lesson

My first focus is establishing my students level of knowledge in the subject, and most importantly their learning style. Everyone processes information differently and the beauty of one-on-one tutoring is I can cater the lessons to the students needs. If they're a visual learner I will find ways to add lots of visuals to what we are learning to help it stick for the student. I will also discuss with students their study methods to see if there is any way they can become more effective. From this foundation students are in the strongest position to process and retain what I teach them, and what they learn in the classroom.
