About Maija

My background in psychology and social work informs my approach to tutoring. I am dedicated to being strengths-based and viewing students holistically. I have experience working with students with any number of challenges and am invested in my students' growth and sucess.

I love seeing my students grow over time, both in their practical academic skills and (more importantly) in their confidence. Particularly for younger children, I love feeding their curiosity helping foster a love of learning. For students of all ages, I am passionate about helping them achieve things they originally found overwhelming to approach or even impossible.

I have a BA in Psychology and am in my final semester of my MSW program. I've studied psychology of learning and throughout my social work education have continued to learn about what facilitates learning. During my graduate school program, I interned at a middle school and at a day treatment center preschool. In addition to freelance, I work with an agency as a trauma-informed tutor with foster youth.

About the lesson

When I start with a new student, my process depends on the age. For young children, I typically first speak with the parent to get some background information about their concerns and if I can get any insight as to where they currently stand with things like reading and numbers. The first session is often a mixture of assessing their skill level so I can plan for future sessions, and building rapport with the student.

For older students and adults, I let them drive the process as much as possible. I'll ask about what they hope to get from tutoring, what has worked or hasn't worked for them in the past, and we address if they have any particular goals for either that session or over a longer timeframe.

I have worked with a broad range of students. I've worked with typically-developing children as well as children with special needs. I most heavily have worked with younger children who are delayed with their early math and reading skills, but have experience across age and skill levels.
