About Davis

For one, I am very excited about teaching, especially math. I am not tutoring for money, or to put it on a resume or application. It makes genuinely happy to help people learn and alleviate stress or worry from students' lives. Also, I am a younger student that can easily relate to teenagers or younger children. Compared to older college graduates and instructors, I have just gone through the same concepts and ideas that I tutor. Thus, I have a more refreshed view of them.

I specifically enjoy when someone grasps a concept that was once difficult for them. We have all been there when we have had those "ah hah" moments where we had a breakthrough in our own understanding or have completed a new skill for the first time. It is great to experience first hand, but also great to watch someone experience it, learn, and grow.

I got started teaching while I was in high school. I would often help classmates inside and outside of class with their work and help them through subjects that I understood well and they would do the same for me. Additionally, as a more formal form of teaching, I work summers as a hockey coach and develop the fundamentals and skills of young hockey players.

I am currently taking a gap year from the University of Notre Dame after completing high school. I have worked as a hockey coach teaching the fundamentals of the sport and developing the skills of youth hockey players. Asides from that my teaching has been learned from interactions I have had teaching fellow classmates or underclassmen at my previous high school.

About the lesson

For me, I like to get to know the student a little bit. Learn about what they enjoy learning about, their passions, and what they lik to do outside of class. That way I can begin to develop a personal relationship with them. This makes tutoring sessions a lot more inviting and not so dreadful environment for students where they can feel free to talk or engage about things that go beyond what we are studying or learning.

I have worked with all sorts of different students from different backgrounds and places. I have taught children of all ages from 3-18. I have taught children with mental or physical disabilites. I have taught people I knew well and people I did not know at all.

I would tell the student to find a tutor that they enjoy learning with. Tutoring can certainly be something that is enjoyable for a student if the right fit is found. Additionally, I think the tutor needs to be engaged and passionate about what they are teaching in order for the student to have a good learning environment.

One recent event I was fond of was my birthday. I turned 19 this September (2020) and I was so happy to speak to so many of my friends and family via phone or text. As a student, I am far away from my family and friends so hearing from made my week. I facetimed a good friend of mine from high school in Norway and another one that is from Russia. People that I do not hear from often that gave me their time and wished me well on my birthday. I also really enjoyed the efforts my family put in to make my birthday special. My dad, mom, and sister each put in their own little touches to make my birthday more than just another day. Like my sister ordering edible arrangements for me, or my dad sending me a ridiculous message of him as an alien singing happy birthday.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Personally, I think the only thing a student needs to do before talking to a teacher is have a specific plan on what areas they are struggling with and where they feel they need the help. It is hard for a teacher to help a student when all the say is that they are struggling with algebra for example. Whereas, if a student says they need help graphing linear functions than we have a specific starting point and specific area that we can work on and improve.

Details

I do not have a standard pricing system for my lessons. I generally would range from the $20-50 an hour depending on what the family is comfortable with or thinks is reasonable.
