About Anna

I am a college graduate with a degree in Middle Grades Education from Mercer University in Macon, GA. I have completed and passed all certification requirements to teach Math and Social Studies for grades 4-8 in the state of GA. I have been tutoring Middle and Highschool students for 3 years in Math, Social Studies, and Language Arts. I love taking the time to help students learn not only the material, but also the best ways that they learn. I take the time to evaluate students' learning styles as I work with them so that I am able to present the material in the way the student can best understand it. Most of my experience teaching and tutoring is with students who are struggling in their classes, but I also have experience with students who are performing at and above grade level proficiencies.

I love seeing kids realize that they can do it. I want kids to learn the material, but I also want them to learn to believe in themselves and to not quit when they feel stuck.

I spent two years of college in student teaching positions, and I have three years of experience tutoring in a paid position.

My first teaching experience was when I was 12 and I helped teach preschool choir. In my Calculus classes in highschool I was paired with other students to help tutor them through the class. These and other similar experiences helped me see how much I enjoyed teaching others and seeing their excitement at being able to understand something they had never understood before.

About the lesson

In my first meeting with a student I will ask them to show me work examples from their class so that I can see what they need to work on. I would also like to see some of the student's completed work that has been graded by the teacher if possible. If these are not available, I will prepare a set of questions for the student to work through so that I can see what areas they need the most help with, and how they tend to problem solve.

My longest student teaching placement was with underperforming 6th grade students. I have also student taught gifted 6th grade and 4th grade. I have tutored across all subjects and skill levels in a highschool group tutoring program.

My greatest advice to a student looking for a math tutor is to commit yourself to learning, believe in yourself, and get the words "I can't" out of your vocabulary. Telling yourself you can't do something just distracts you from seeing what you can do, and once you find one step you can do, you'll find another and another and another until you've met your goals. You can do this. Your tutor will guide you and teach you each new step. My secondary advice is that there is so much more to being good at math than a test score. A tutor needs to do more than just give you test problems to work through. They need to teach you how to understand the problem, how to problem solve, and all of the mathematical tools you need to solve all the problems the test can give you.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
If you are in the GA public school system, you should look for someone with recent experience tutoring Math in GA, because the Georgia math standards are unique and can be difficult to make sense of if a teacher or tutor is new to the GA system.
You should look for someone with experience teaching and not just with high Math grades, especially if you are not being tutored for a college class. You want someone who is able to walk you through the process of learning, not just show you how they solve a problem. You can watch someone do that for free on YouTube.
