About Courtney

I have recently moved to Cookeville and I am subbing at a local middle school. I have worked in all types of classrooms including special ed. I love tutoring because it allows me to do fun activities that are personalized to a specific student.

What I enjoy most about teaching and tutoring is watching a child grow in their learning. I want learning to be fun and for a struggling student I understand that can be hard. I feel that as a teacher, it is my job to help a student grow in their learning while also making learning a life long skill. Students need to be equiped with the knowledge of how to learn before they can begin learning and enjoying learning.

I got started teaching becuase of my own struggles with learning. I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was in second grade. Because of my ADHD it was hard for me to focus in school and I quickly fell behind. If it wasn't for the amazing teachers that I had when I was little I would have never grown as much as I have. I want to be able to help any type of students succeed both in the classroom and in life.

I have a bachelors degree in Elementary Education from Furman University. I am also working towards my Masters in Special Education. I have worked with students in general education classrooms as well as in special education classrooms.

About the lesson

My typical process for working with students is to first get to know them. As a teacher, I believe it is important to ask the student what they believe their strenghts and weaknesses are in school and in their learning. I also believe that getting to know what a student likes in life, such as sports, games, or hobbies is also important to how they are going to learn. Once I have gotten to know the student, I want to show them that I have their best interests at heart and that I will help them in any situation.

I have worked with all types of students. I have had students who are multiple grade levels behind in reading and math. I have also worked with students who need to be challenged and their classroom is not able to challenge them.
