About William
I am currently a sophomore international studies major, strategic communications minor at Hampton University. My academic interests include debate, creative writing, communications, leadership, and humanities. Following my college graduation, I aim to obtain my JD MBA to fulfill my passion for political science as well as international business.
I love to build relationships with new people and to stimulate learning in the minds of other intellectuals. My leadership, my innate ability to connect with anyone, and my passion for spreading knowledge allow those I tutor to create a real connection with the material and myself.
This is actually my first foray into professional tutoring, but I've assisted my peers in subject comprehension in multiple english and composition courses, basic algebra 1, algebra 2, and pre-calculus courses, and history courses since fall of 2016. Initially, I did so as a favor to help them master their respective classes, but as I continued to tutor more and more of my classmates, the more I enjoyed helping develop their understanding of their courses and reinforcing my own personal knowledge of each of these subjects.
I worked as a college preparation student worker at KD College Prep in Plano, Texas from April 2018 to November 2018. As an employee there, I organized SAT/ACT workshops and classes to maximize the progress of students and improve their standardized test-taking abilities. I also recorded the attendance of different test preparation sessions, increased overall attendance of the company's tutoring sessions significantly through consistent promotion, and distributed and administered practice SAT tests, ACT tests, and SAT subject tests. Aside from my professional experience, I received a National Merit Scholarship Commendation in October 2019 for my performance on the PSAT, and I was recognized as an AP Scholar with honors in both 2018 and 2019 as a result of my exemplary performance on my AP exams throughout high school. I graduated high school cum laude, and have received Dean's List every semester of college since spring of 2020. I'm currently an honors student and a recipient of the Hampton University Presidential Scholarship, granted to me because of my exceptional performance in my high school courses and my standardized tests. I have an aptitude for creative writing and public speaking, further demonstrated in the Youtube link on my profile- which connects to my TED talk- and my success on the Hampton University Debate and Forensics Team since September of 2020. My mastered coursework includes European history, East Asian history, Oral Communications, Political Science, Media Writing, Visual Media, Macroeconomics, and Government and Politics in Europe.

I try to get an undertsanding for what kind of learner they are. Some are visual, while others learn by listening. There are others that are most successful by learning through doing, that is to say, writing the information down themself. Then, I try to find similarities between them and myself, whether it be personal interests or academic. This way, our relationship is stronger than simply tutor and student, and I'm able to more easily connect with those I'm tutoring, which usually creates greater comprehension on their part. Lastly, once I get an understanding for what they need assistance understanding/learning, I'll format the material in such a way that best accomodates that student, which will allow the optimal opportunity for them to completely grasp the given subject.
I typically work with high school students and other college students, simply because they're the most accessible and usually require the most academic assistance.
I would advise that they search for a tutor in high school or college, possibly a graduate student, simply because in my experience, it's been much easier to learn from those and to teach those who are close to my age becuase we can usually relate to one another more than a much older tutor. I'd also advise that a student look for a tutor that's performed well in the course subject in the past that they're teaching, and that a student also seeks someone who's actually passionate about the given subject they're tutoring
I'm very fond of having competed in the HBCU Nationals Debate Tournament in late February 2021. I competed in parliamentary debate, informative speech, poetry interpretation, impromptu speech, and extemperaneous speech. I was a finalist for the impromptu speech event and was awarded the Hampton University Top Competitor for the tournament.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The following are questions students should think through before talking to teachers about their needs:
What do I want to get out of this class?
How much work am I willing to put in to be successful?
Have I done everything I can to master the material on my own?
What makes this subject pertinent to my own life and my own interests?
