About Joel

I am dedicated to not only helping the student understand the topic, but also master the topic. This is done through short lessons, and sessions designed around identifying the problem area and working together to overcome the problem. I consider a succesful session to be a session where the student can solve a somewhat difficult problem all on their own.

The sound in a student's voice when they finally understand a topic they have been having trouble with for a while is the most satisfying aspect of the job. When a student can consistently solve problems all on their own I cannot help myself from feeling so proud of the student.

I have always been pretty good at math and in 5th grade I began tutoring my peers who were having trouble in math. Since that moment I have enjoyed the feeling of helping someone understand a topic they were having trouble with. Since my freshman year in High School I have been consistently tutoring Middle and High School students in their math courses.

I am majoring in Mechanical Engineering (a math and science heavy major) at NJIT and am a member of the Albert Dorman Honors College.

The highest level math course I have taken is Calculus III (Multi-Variable). In highschool I took AP Calculus AB and scored a 5 (the highest possible).

I have a lot of experience tutoring, however up until recently it was on a volunteer basis. I tutor 4 of my relatives (they range from 4th to 8th grade) and in High School I would tutor anyone on my track team who needed help after practice.

About the lesson

Prior to each session I will create examples and problems for the student to solve that are specific to the chapter that the student is on. When the session begins, I will give a short lesson and after working through the examples, I will give a problem to the student to solve. I will then identify where the student is having trouble in the problem-solving process, then help the student overcome the issue. The goal of each session is for the student to be able to solve a somewhat difficult problem from the chapter all by themselves.

Of course not every student is the same, so if the student or the parent would like to try a different approach that they believe is more effective I am open to teaching using that approach.

I have tutored Middle School and High School students. I have experience teaching students with ADHD, and students who lack a strong background in math (which is a common cause of difficulties in math).

Before you contact a teacher, find some examples from the chapter(s) you are having trouble with, maybe even send the teacher an attempt at a solution for the problem. This way the teacher can have a chance to prepare a lesson, and if you send an attempt at a solution, the teacher can build the lesson around the area you are having trouble with.

Recently a former teammate of mine, who I have been tutoring in his Pre-Calculus class, called me out of the blue to excitedly tell me he aced his Pre-Calculus midterm! The sound of excitement and pride in his voice was heart-warming.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What does the student expect to get out of tutoring? Would the student just like some extra practice, or does the student need a total lesson on the chapter (or possibly even multiple chapters).

Is the student open to tutoring/learning? Often times (especially with younger students) students are not open to learning, and refuse to give effort during sessions. It is important for the student to know that the tutor/teacher would just like to help, and if the student is open to getting this help it will make learning much easier and more fun.

Details

Typically the rate ranges from $20/hour - $30/hour, however the rate is always up for negotiation. The rate increases as the level of math increases.

Middle School students and under can expect around $20/hour.

High School students can expect around $25/hour.

College level students can expect around $30/hour.

All students that leave a review will recieve a permanent $1/hour discount.
