About Alyssa
I have been tutoring students of all ages (from preschool to adult) for the past twelve years. I have experience tutoring a wide range of subjects including (but not limited to) English grammar, writing, phonics, elementary science, earth science, physical science, biology, chemistry, physics, American history, world history, social studies, basic math, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, Spanish, and study skills. Additionally, I have experience working with various learning disabilities such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADHD, and autism. I strive to bring patience, flexibility, and excitement to each tutoring session; and I truly care about each of my students individually. To watch them finally “get it” makes my day! From leadership awards and scholarships to top grades and leadership positions, from various volunteer work with kids to my full time job teaching, I am highly qualified and willing to assist you with your academic endeavors. Please contact me soon!
My father always taught in the Christian school I attended growing up. He taught high school math and English, and I wanted to be just like him! To watch him and the other teachers make such a difference in the lives of their students — from a young age I knew that was exactly what I wanted to do with my life! Now I get to live out my dream teaching junior high / high school, tutoring in the afternoons, and developing new school curricula and educational games for my students.
I have a master’s degree in education (curriculum and development) as well as an undergraduate major in secondary education with a minor in elementary education. I am also TEFL certified, oh, and first aide / CPR certified (just in case). All this certification came after achieving an ACT score of 31 and turning down scholarships to Harvard, Yale, and other Ivy League schools to study and help in my church and its Christian school.

When I first meet a new student, I begin by building a solid connection with the parent but mainly with the student. I take the time to learn about him: his preferred learning style, his difficulties in school, but also his hobbies and anything else I can use to get him excited about learning.
I have worked with students of all ages — preschool students beginning to learn how to read and count, high school students trying to get their grades up to stay in sports, and adults studying feverishly for vital tests (such as the GED, TExES, TEAS, and similar).
I have worked with all grade levels and subjects (English, math, science, history, and fine arts classes). Additionally, I have worked with learners of all styles and abilities — tactile, visual, and auditory learners plus those with ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, and autism.
Find a tutor who is willing to work with you. If you have a busy schedule with limited time to meet, will the potential tutor work with that? If you can’t quite pay top dollar for his services, will he still be willing to help? If you have to cancel last minute because something comes up suddenly, how will the tutor respond? Find a flexible tutor who will not only teach you but also work with you to help you achieve your best!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should ask themselves first of all, “What am I looking for in a tutor?” Are you looking for homework help, a more thorough understanding of the subject, or someone who can help you develop and stick to study skills that will help you in the future.
Also ask yourself, “What kind of a personality would I most enjoy from a tutor?” Are you more interested in a quick-paced intellectual who can explain the ins and outs of the subject to you, a down-to-earth friend who can slow down and make sure you understand the material, or a fun-loving buddy who can make any subject interesting and exciting?
