About Melanie
Get up to speed with a Maryland certified elementary school tutor! I've been teaching for over 20 years, hold an Advanced Professional teaching certificate in Elementary Education and am currently a 3rd grade teacher in Greenbelt. I absolutely love my job! I'm looking to help kids bridge the gap in their education that can occur for several reasons- the summer being only one of them!
I use manipulatives, white boards, song, and humor in my daily teaching to make learning fun!
I love, love watching kids "get it", especially for the first time! If given the right environment, kids will blossom, and I have made it my passion to help kids blossom!
My family is full of teachers, so I guess that it's in my blood! I've always wanted to be a teacher and can't imagine doing anything else!
I have been teaching for over 20 years, grades 3-5.

Kids need to feel safe and cared for. When working with a new student, it's important that we connect, so I'll get to know him or her- likes and dislikes- and share a little about me (I have two almost grown kids, I have two dogs, etc.). I usually bring in pictures, and ask that the student share pictures of his/her own!
I'll give a pre-test based on the student's grade in school to assess areas of growth. If a student has something that they want to focus on, I'll do further assessing.
I'll also, as early as can be detected, determine the learning style of a student. Many need to have the problems modeled in writing (visual learner), as well as needing manipulatives (tactile) to help enhance the lesson. Some do best by listening to the explanation (aural learner). It's my job to meet the needs of each student.
I've worked with all kinds of students both in the public and private sector, some that get it right away, and some that need one-on-one attention to help them gain the self-confidence and strategies to know that they can do it!
Look for a teacher who cares and who is able to design a program that is specific to your learning needs and styles.
My students and I have races to see who can finish their timed multiplication test first. I've promised them that if they beat me, I'll bring dessert for them for the rest of the year.
Today we had a race, and I won. The kids were so into it, that there was cheering and applause- it didn't matter that I won, just that they did their best.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Academically, students should always feel as though they can always talk to their teacher when they don't get it yet. It's imperative that the lines of communication be open. When a student is able to communicate the exact place where they get lost, the teacher can better help the student.
As well, being able to express their own general areas of growth (multiplication, division, using the distributive property, adding/subtracting fractions, etc.)
In general, teaching kids to advocate for themselves is a skill that will be used throughout their life, and I'm always impressed with kids who can advocate!
Often, however, especially with kids who feel overwhelmed with school, kids don't advocate for themselves. They don't even know where to begin to ask for help. My job is to help kids learn how to do just that. It takes practice and modeling.
