About Susan

I have been a teacher for 22 years. I began my carrier in a 5-8 school in Vermont, then moved back to Massachuseets where I have taught 5th and 3rd grade. In this time I have tutored in math, MCAS prep, and even HS algebra. I have worked with all different learners, from learners needing intereventions with organization, to IEP students, to providing enrichment opportunities. I have also been on math committes for the majority of my years teaching. In this role I helped to develop curriculum, create assessments, performed curriculum reviews, participated in school visits to scope out potnetial math programs, and reppresented my grade level team in making pacing and curriculum decisions for the school district.

There is nothing like watching a leanrer finally understand and therefore ENJOY math. Most students will report that they are "bad" at math or dislike math. I tell them that is only becasue they have not met me yet!

I began my career as support staff for students with combined mental illness and learning issues. MOst of my work was aorund Social/Emitional first, then academics second.

About the lesson

I typically spend the first session assessing their basic math skill set. I observe them solving a variety of math problems to see where they are successful and where they struggle. This is also a time to make sure that our personalities match as well.

I have taught students with diagnosis of Autism, mental health issues (bi-polar, depressions, mood regulation), students with Executive Functioning disorders, reluctant learners (variety of reasons), typical students, and studetns who need to be more challenged.

I would suggest hiring a teacher that has has experience in the area you are seeking. The teacher should also have a variety of years of experience in which he/she has deleloped a "tool kit" for any situation.

Since we have transitioned to virtual learning, the struggles have been real! I was so proud at one of our online math lessons where all of the students attended the lesson, were engaged, and could complete the lesson exit ticket in small break out geoups. It was the first time 100% of the students completed their work!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should ask about the teacher's experience. Another great question would be one time they are especially proud of, or one time they would have taught a lesson differently.
