About Makenzie

As a University student who is both studying in a theoretical S.T.E.M field and a hands-on creative field, I am uniquely posistioned as a tutor. Though my engineering degree I have gained an extensive and deeper understanding of many subjects such as math and physics. Through my threatre studies, I have been able to explore traditional and creative/alternative methods of teaching and communication.

I enjoy helping students find a passion for school. As a young kid, I was extremely lucky to have a support system in my family and school that helped me through my education and who taught me to love learning. I want to share that with others; to show students that school does not have to be something so daunting, but can be an amazing exploratory experience.

I started gaining teaching experience through my high school activities. Through the National Honor Society, I worked as a elementary level tutor of all subjects for 4 years at Hawaii's local public schools and homeless communities. As part of the Christian Ministries program, I was able to hold many seminars and prepare weekly lessons on philosophy and christian thought for different groups with children ages 3-18. I was also the team captain of our schools science olympiad team as well as president of Model UN. This meant teaching a variety of S.T.E.M subjects as well as political science to high school aged students bi-weekly for 2 years.

In college I began tutoring at higher levels of math and physics for my fellow students at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. I have helped students at varying ages in a number of subjects including calculus, mechanics, thermodynamics and quantum mechanics. I am also pursuing a degree in theatre at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Most of my work in the threatre department has been with the Theatre for Young Audiences faculty. Through my studies with them, I have been able to study and practice creative ways to engage and teach young children from todlers to high schoolers.

I have also had many teaching opportunities through my part time jobs and internships. S.H.I.N.E theatre company, is a local theatre group that aims to get children aged 8-18 involved in threatre. As a Set Designer for their productions, I have not only had to design and build props and sets for their shows, but simultaneously teach young students about set design, creative work in the theatre, and lead them in hands on workshops. As and engineering intern for the Department of Defense, I also have experience with putting together teaching presentations, seminars, and learning packets on extremely complicated information for high level professionals.

About the lesson

Typically, I like to meet with the student first to get a general idea of what subject area they would like to focus on, and specifically where they are having issues.

I also like to see what course material their classes are working with. As the style of teaching can vary greatly between different schools and teachers, it is important to see what textbooks we will be working off of, as well as what type of homework and tests will be given. With this, we can develop an efficient manner of studying that will not only help the student understand the material, but also how to approach the given course work in a tactical manner.

Finally, when proceeding with the teaching, I like to break the subject up into smaller lessons. Each lesson will start with a small portion of the course material. We will go through it together, try looking at it in different ways until it is understood, then see how it is applied through practice problems. Once we finish a sufficient amount of practice problems with increasing difficulty, we will briefly review what we have learned, then move on to the next section. By tackeling the subject in a progressive step by step process, the problem subject area will often loose much of its intimidation and relieve some of the stress that might come with studying. This process also allows for the easy implementation of different teaching tactics that may help students who learn better in unconventional ways.

I have worked with a variety of ages from 3 years of age to 30+. Most of my experience is working with 2nd-8th graders, however I have recently gained quite a bit of experience working with students of a wide variety of ages at the University level.
