About Susan

I have a degree in Mathematical Sciences from The University of Houston, Clear Lake, Texas. I also have additional graduate level secondary education hours from Stephen F. Austing State University. I am certified in secondary mathematics in the state of Texas for grades 7-12. I started teaching because I have a passion for mathematics and I love helping students.

I have taught everything from 8th grade math through AP Calculus in Texas public school over the last 15 years. I have experience teaching all concepts grades 7-12 needed to be successful in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Pre-Cal, Calculus and College Algebra. I also have expenience teaching professional development sessions related to each of these courses.

About the lesson

When I begin working with a new student, I start out by talking with the student and his/her parents to get an idea of past performance in Math classes as well as current and future needs. I also determine whether the student needs help with specific content being studied in a course in which they are currently enrolled, help preparing for upcoming testing or remediation in content areas in which the student struggles. In some cases, I also use online diagnostic testing.

I have work with all types of students in a traditional classroom setting including students who receive SPED services, 504 accomodations and GT students.

I would suggest that they first clearly define their expections and then ask questions to see if I would be a good fit for them. I always give students a 50% discount on their first visit and they are under no obligation after that if they are not satisfied.

I recently had an Algebra 2 student in my class who was very weak in his Algebra 1 skills and needed to do a lot of work to catch up and be able to handle current course content. He started out failing the first two quizzes and our first major test. He came to me, very discouraged and said he was trying but just didn't "get it". I told him that if he was willing to come in some mornings and afternoons for additional tutorials, I would work with him to get him caught up. He then began coming 3-5 times a week for extra help. On the semester exam for Algebra 2, he made an 85 and ended the semester with a high "B" average. All he needed was some encouragement and a little extra attention.

Details

I charge $40/hour if a student comes to my home for tutoring and $50/hour if I go to them (up to 20 miles). I also offer STARR, EOC and College Prep test tutorials for $50/hour (I provide materials).
