About Allison

Most students and parents say my strengths are in my patience, enthusiasm, and ability to explain content in multiple ways. If something isn't working, I don't give up but I also recognize the student may need it presented in a different way. That's one of the reasons why I love Math so much, there is a ton of creativity one can bring to the problem solving process. I am all about getting to know the learner as an individual so that the assistance can be specifically tailored to them. I am always open to feedback as well. I want the learner to tell me what works and doesn't work for them. Communication is key!

Helping people see what they are truly capable of academically is truly amazing. I am grateful to have the opportunity to work with learners and help them whatever the scenario. Whether it's questions on homework, preparing for an upcoming test, catching up on material, or just general studying for a subject, I love helping!

I began tutoring around the same time I began babysitting at the age of 14. So many of the families I babysat for had kids who wanted help with their homework. I quickly developed a passion for helping others learn. I've continued to teach/tutor for the past 13 years and love it!

Teach For America Milwaukee Corps Member - Taught 4 years at the high school level for 9th-12th graders at my placement school. Also participated in weekly coaching and pedagogical development. Moved back to Michigan and currently teach high school Math at Lake Michigan Catholic High School.

Master of Education, with a Secondary Math Concentration, from Marquette University.

Worked as a Math Learning Center Coach for 3 years in college, tutoring traditional, non-traditional, international, and ESL students, as well as students with special needs.

About the lesson

When working with a new student, I always want to work toward building a relationship first before jumping right into the content. I believe in building a relationship of trust, respect, and vulnerability. When these three aspects of learning are present, truly great growth and academic excellence can be achieved.

I have worked with a wide array of students: traditional, non-traditional, international, ESL, student-athletes, as well as students with IEPs and 504-Behavior Plans. Ages ranging from elementary level to adult.

Often times, I feel half of the struggle with math is a mental game. I believe it is important to have a tutor with whom you feel comfortable advocating for yourself and making mistakes. Together, that mental block can be overcome!

Recently, a student I have tutored and mentored for the past four years got accepted into their #1 choice for college. She immediately called me and hearing the excitement in her voice was the best reward. I feel honored to have been a part of her special moment.
