About Coleman

I come from a family who has engaged young minds throughout the generations. Watching the students achieve theirs goals has been tremendously fulfilling. My steps towards helping students is, finding out where they need help. I also make the learning interactive, because engaging the mind into different thought processes helps with memory and recall. I want to make learning fun and not just a lecture where they just sit and listen. Sometimes, I have my students do the "teach me method", this will show how much of the students knowledge has been retained. I always ask questions towards the end to see what the students have learned.

I have been teaching for ten years while going to college. I have taught students from ages three to eighteen. I have experience teaching children with special needs from as young as three. I have been a tutor for children in my local school zone for children Pre-K to 12. During my time at college, I had the opportunity to tutor other students in peer-to-peer tutoring. During this time, I tutored students in psychology 101, abnormal psychology, college level english 101 and college level english 102. After college, I had the opportunity to tutor adults with special needs and help them reach daily and weekly goals.

I graduated from a two year college with my associate degree in Liberal Art's, and my area of interest was psychology. I continued my education, where I graduated with my bachelor's degree in Communication studies. My sub study was Interpersonal and Cultural communication with background in Organizational studies. I obtained a certificate in special needs education while obtaining my bachelor's.

I enjoy seeing my students doing well in their academics, and achieving better grades and a better self confidence.

I started teaching with local children in my school zone. I was appointed three siblings, when I was in a volunteer tutoring program when I was getting my associate degree. I had taught and tutored a variety of topics Math, Science, English, and History. I also helped with ESL, school projects, college scholarship essay, and and a variety of other extra curricular classes.

During this time, I hands on experience with teaching children, and I was able to see how much my students were able to achieve and grow. I was able to see their confidence grow and they became more willing to participate in class at school. I am always tremendously proud my students progress and achievements, no matter how big or small.

I have my associates degree in Liberal Art's and my degrees interest was in Psychology. I have my bachelor's degree in Communication studies with my sub studies being in Interpersonal and Cultural Communication. I also have background in Organizational Communication and how communication relates to Organizatios and corporations. I have received certification in special needs education for children.

Before I tutored at the college, I had to go through a brief training where I was taught how to go about tutoring different and diverse students. This is when I started tutoring college students in a variety of psychology classes as well as English classes.

I had tutored children with behavioural and learning disabilities over a four month period where I obtained my certificate in special needs education for children. I worked with children children on the Autism Spectrum, children with Down Syndrome, children with cognitive disoders and learning disabilities , as well as behavioural problems.

About the lesson

I get to know my student a little bit first and see where their at in their education. I will do the "teach me method" depending on the student and what their learning. I have them tell me where they need help and where their is some need for further help. We will set goals from the beginning of the session. At this point, I will evaluate what has to be done to help my student achieve their goals.

I have work with students from Pre-K -12 and I have experience with children with a variety of special needs. I have also taught students with ESL. I have tutored college students in different subjects and was able to help them pass their classes. I also have experience teaching and tutoring adults with a variety of special needs. I help these adults continue their learning to meet their goals and wanted achievements.

I would set up goals on what you want to achieve from in one lesson, a week, month, end of school year. Organize your work, which will be extremely helpful in learning. Come with questions regarding what you need help with. Don't be afraid to ask questions this shows you are interested in learning and are engaged. There is no such thing as a bad question, because you never know how many people maybe thinking the same thing. Always try to engage in your classroom experience and interact with others and the teacher.

I have been tutoring a young lady since she was ten years old. Throughout the years she has had her ups and downs in schooling, but I know she is a very brilliant person. Clearly,I was able to see when she was interested in a topic and was really getting it. She was really engaged in her civil service class and wanted to do more volunteering, so I helped her find local places of interest. Upon reaching graduation she was really uncertain about college, and she started to believe she wasn't good enough to even apply and go. I sat down with her to have her come up with some ideas for a scholarship essay. Her ideas for the essay was so heartfelt about her families struggle to make a better life for her and her siblings. A few weeks later she received a letter telling her she received a scholarship for college and was able to even meet other scholarship requirements. I remember that time so clearly and happy she and I both were. She really achieved so much from a fifth grader afraid to speak in class, a middle schooler with slipping grades if she didn't have help, to a high schooler engaged with her community and a high school graduate with wonderful grades.

I would have them think about what area they need help in? What teaching methods is hardest for them? What teaching method do they enjoy? Do you enjoy teaching that is interactive, lecture based, or other types of teaching? Is there something they feel is not working for them? Is there specific non class related areas that are making it hard to learn? Is there any needs that will make learning easier for you? Do you want to get out of this lesson?
