About Desmond

My biggest accomplishment to date is that I have taught scholars from all grade levels K-12. I have experience teaching Science, Math, Social Studies and English in three districts. I am an educator who understands the diverse needs of our scholars and takes pride in my discussed based lessons.

I enjoy being able to mold the minds of our youth. My favorite part about teaching is seeing a scholars go from “not interested” to being invested in education. I also enjoy seeing parents value education as much as the scholars themselves. It truly takes a village to raise a child and what better support for a scholar then their guardians who they look up to.

In college I assisted highschool age scholars with college prep materials and mentored them through the college application process. Immediately after college I applied for Americorps City Year Philadelphia. After a year I became a full time teacher and became gain a general teaching certification as well as a graduate level certification through The University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Beside 4 years in education, I have plenty of hours of training on various topics ranging from teaching diverse students, students with disabilities, learning styles, behavioral management and differentiating lessons. I have graduate level certification for middle grade education but have experience teaching the entire K-12 scope. I was a member of Teach for America and City Year Philadelphia where I also had extensive training.

About the lesson

When I work with scholars I typically start with getting to know them and what they enjoy about school. It helps to understand who their favorite teacher is and why? Their favorite teacher usually has a certain quality and/or teaching style that is appealing and I like to pull from those ideas to create relevant lesson plans that the scholar is used to.

I have worked with scholars from 3 different states at every level K-12. I have had the experience working in public and charter schools. In each of these schools I worked closely with low income, first generation college students. With this experience I hope to bring a wholistic and versatile approach to my tutoring lessons.

Always enter your sessions with questions and leave with answers. There are always questions to be asked and Q&As are one of the best ways to learn.

My most recent professional feedback I have received was “Desmond is dedicated to helping others and seeing task through, his relationship building is also great”. I hope to bring this same energy when tutoring your scholars.
