About Jason

Hi prospective students and parents!

My name is Jay, and I have a Bachelor in Physics and Mathematics from Brandeis University and a decade working in analytics and product management in Finance and FinTech. I also have several years experience tutoring, starting with volunteer programs in high school for math and physics and continuing into college, where I taught SAT/ACT prep and math ranging from basic math and algebra to differential equations and complex analysis.

As I return to school for data science and a Master in Mathematics, I am looking to take on students seeking help with or supplementation to their current Math, Physics, or Python coding/Data Structures classwork. I'm available weeknights after 6pm EST. Please feel free to reach out so we can build a success plan!

I volunteered in high school to tutor my peers in math and physics, eventually taking on paid tutoring jobs in college. I was also a teaching intern at Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, CT for a summer supplementary education program.

I have a Bachelor in Math and Physics from Brandeis University as well as several years experience tutoring students from middle school to college age. My tutoring has covered everything from elementary to college-level mathematics, high school to college physics, and high school to early college computer science. I was also a teaching intern at Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, CT for a summer supplementary education program.

About the lesson

For students struggling with a topic, the first order of business is identifying the specific point of weakness. Often, this point of weakness is an imperfect understanding of a previous lesson that went undiscovered, resulting in issues in later learning. My students and I will walk through problems on homework and tests where they lack comfort, and I'll determine the fundamental concepts required to be confident in their answers. I'll then put together a worksheet we can go through together to become proficient in these concepts. I'll then prepare a worksheet with problems similar to those the student was struggling with to ensure understanding.

For supplemental students, I offer tutoring in advanced topics as well as a supplemental Python learning experience, where I teach them how to code the solutions to their homework and tests. Not only will this ground their learning in an applied domain instead of just keeping it on a piece of paper, but will teach them one of the most sough-after skills by employers everywhere: software development. After 6 months of my program, I would expect the student to have a firm grasp on Object Oriented Programming, Data Structures, and Algorithms, key concepts for any development professional. They will also learn how to break down problems into their core components and think methodically and logically on how to create reproducible and easy-to-understand solutions.

I've worked with students ranging in age from middle schoolers to undergraduates. I also have experience with both remedial learners as well as advanced students requiring supplemental education.

Hiring a tutor means hiring someone who will personalize an education plan. Simply providing generic worksheets for practice likely will not address any shortcomings in your knowledge nor lead to a more advanced understanding of the topic, as the student will be bored by the problems they can solve easily and will get less practice and attention on fundamental concepts that may be lacking.

Make sure your tutor spends time outside of your lessons with them preparing for your studies together. If your lessons with them are easy, it's time to find a new tutor.

Last month, I met with my friends for the first time in ages due to COVID. One of them decided she wanted an ice cream cone, and tried shoving it into her mouth before remembering to take her mask off. She smelled like cookie dough for the rest of the night.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Is there a question I had in class during a lesson that I didn't or wasn't able to ask?

Is there a pattern to the types of questions I tend to struggle with? That is, do I have more trouble with word problems, graphing, etc.?

Were there problems from a previous lesson that I answered incorrectly and I'm not sure what I did wrong?

Was there a previous lesson during which I was distracted or had difficulty paying attention?

For non-AP high school math and physics topics: $90/hr

For AP high school math and physics topics: $100/hr
