About Tonya

Teaching math is my passion. I have taught 5th through 8th math and Algebra I for the past 27 years. I work full time in the public school system and have a keen understanding of common misconceptions for students. I have taught students ranging in abilities from special education through gifted and talented. I am certified in special education, ESL,math grades 4-8, and gifted and talented in the great state of Texas.

I enjoy kids and watching them grow not only academically but also in maturity and how they handle different situations. Helping others is at the root of my passion for teaching. Also, I love change. Each day is a new and different day from the day before in teaching.

I entered college as an accounting major. During my freshman year, I discovered business math was not for me. I went to the counseling center and took and interest survey. It showed my areas of strongest interest were bus driver, secretary, and teacher. I majored in elementary education with a minor in special education. Teaching is truly my passion.

I am certified in special education, ESL, Math grades 4-8, and gifted and talented. I also have a masters degree in Education Administration. I have spent many years staying up to date with math through ongoing professional learning throughout my teaching career.

About the lesson

I like to find out their learning style, what they understand about a concept, and what they don’t understand about a concept. I also like to know their interests so I can relate math to them in ways they can relate.

I have worked with students from life skills (severely handicapped) up through gifted and talented. Each type of student I have worked with over the years have their own unique abilities and struggles.

You want someone who truly cares about your learning and is knowledgeable in math and has experience.

This year I switched, by choice, from being a classroom teacher to a special education co teacher. I love celebrating everything from small improvements to great successes with my students. When I see them smile because they see improvement or that light bulb suddenly comes on for a concept they have struggled with for a long time, that makes what I do worth every minute. These are the moments that make me love what I do.

What more do I need to know?

Gather all resources (textbook, notes, past assignments), to determine answers to previous two questions and to help the tutor analyze where to start.

Am I prepared to put in the extra work or are my parents making me? If the student is not prepared to work, it is a waste of time for me and money for you.
