About Jack

Hi! I am a second year Master's student at UC San Diego, pursuing my degree in Climate Science. I also have an undergraduate degree from Loyola Marymount University in Civil Engineering and Environmental Science. I am a math and science focused student, and I strive to be a supportive guide in these subjects for students in need. My knowledge spans math topics from basic math to geometry, algebra, calculus, and even differential equations. I have tutored casually for friends, classmates, and family friends, but my kind, positive demeanor is something I take pride in, and I am confident that I can be of great help for any math student!

Sharing knowledge is a passion of mine. The feeling of excitement when you finally understand a problem, or complete a homework assignment all by yourself, is something that can't be overstated. I take pride in empathetically and patiently working with students so that they can experience those feelings as well!

I rely mainly on my previous education, as I have excelled at math and science for my entire educational career and have pursued advanced degrees in those topics. However, I am a compassionate and understanding person, and have taught children and young adults in sports, so I understand that patience and positive reinforcement is essential for learning.

About the lesson

I typically like to start by getting to know the student: what their passions are, how they prefer to learn, what they typically struggle with, and what they intend to gain from tutoring.

Next I ask about which topics they are currently learning, and which of those they struggle with. This helps me figure out a plan for how best to address problems, especially when it comes to reviewing prior knowledge that may be helpful to the current topics.

Then, it's on to learning! I review necessary knowledge with the student, being sure to establish that more time can be spent on any one piece if a topic is confusing. If there are assignments that the student struggles with, I like to start there. If needed, more problems can be provided.
