About TJ

Hiring a tutor is difficult because it doesn't matter how good the tutor is with other students if they aren't the right person for you. The vast majority of professional tutors have a strong knowledge base in the subject matter, but it is less common to find someone who can connect with each student in a unique way that allows them to translate their knowledge into meaningful results.

My approach starts with finding out what works for each student. I ask new students what they have done in the past and why they believe those techniques have not led to the desired results. Next, we take a practice test to establish where we need to start. Then, with your goals in mind, we address problem areas, monitor progress, and reevaluate as the student gains mastery over the material.

The best part about tutoring is seeing students change their perceptions of themselves. Many students think that because they are artistic or athletic, or funny, that they aren't smart or that they are not good students. These students often find that they have not learned the best techniques and study habits, and when they practice effectively they can learn and improve rapidly. All good students know how to use their study time well, and getting to that point without a guide can be very difficult. Like a coach on the field, I provide a framework for students to realize that with practice they can be great!
