About Dr Tom

I started my career teaching algebra in high school, and retired from teaching human development and psychology in college in January, 2013. Although I spent my career in a wide variety of roles, I enjoy tutoring, and counseling the most. Since retiring I've tutored GED students, and helped people prepare for tests such as the SAT, ACT. GRE, GMAT, and other tests.

I hold a B.S. in Ed., M.A., M.B.A., Ed.S., and Ph.D., and have been a teacher, counselor, principal, superintendent, college dean, entrepreneur, president and CEO of an educational technology business, and consultant to teachers, colleges and businesses throughout the world.

I most enjoy helping students achieve their personal and academic goals. I help them learn how to learn and play the academic game. Learning should be fun. Teaching is too. I find that tutoring students with learning problems is particularly rewarding, and I’ve had a lot of experience helping learning disabled students overcome and compensate for their “disability”. I don’t ordinarily tutor children below high school age.

The academic dean at Muskegon Community College where I taught from 2002 to 2012 called me his "utility teacher". When he couldn't find a teacher for a particular class he would ask me to teach it. I didn't especially like teaching technical courses (e.g., statistics), but I thoroughly enjoyed math, writing, humanities, psychology and education courses.

For me, helping students earn their GED is very rewarding. Most GED students don’t have a lot of money, but they have a lot to gain from passing the tests. For these reasons I will negotiate a rate lower than my usual $45 with any GED student in financial hardship. The broad grin they flash when they pass is worth more than money to me.

I hold a BS, MA, MBA, EdS and PhD from prestigeous univerities, and have been a high school teacher, counselor, principal, superintendent, college teacher, dean and vice president. I've also run an educational technology business as CEO for over twenty years. I've been retired now for a few years, and can do what I enjoy most, dealing with adolescents and adults in helping them learn and reach their goals.

I enjoy the relationship with my students and I particularly enjoy seeing their success whether it is a flash of insight when they are trying to comprehend a difficult problem, or the joy they experience when they pass a test.

In 1954 at the age 13 joined the Society of Mary: Attended Marianist Preparatory, the Noviciate, and Scholasticate. Took annual vows of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience beginning in 1958. In 1964 when faced with the choice of perpetual vows or leaving, left to pursue a more normal self-directed life.

About the lesson

We generally start with an informal assessment, and once I find what the students wants to learn we develop a plan.
