About Conrad

Since high school I've been passionate about teaching others. I helped friends and classmates with homework, and explained what teachers failed to. This continued into college, where I also took up supplementary tutoring. I graduated with a BSc. in phyics from California Polytechnic University in 2016, and in 2019, I scored in the top 5% on the N1 Japanese Language Proficiency Test. Whether it be language, math, or the sciences, I have confidence that I can teach you what you need to know and help you reach your goals. I am particularly good at test taking and studying, and would love to pass these skills down to anyone who is interested.

My first major experience teaching was in high school when a substitute teacher had difficulty understanding the materials. I was among the first to figure it out, and was flooded with people asking me to explain it to them. I figured it would be easier to teach the material to the whole class than to explain it as people came up to me, thus starting my first lesson.

I graduated with honors from California Polytechnic University and am JLPT N1 certified. In terms of teaching, I have done both unofficial and official tutoring work in both high school and college.

About the lesson

My typical process for a new student involves several things. First is obviously icebreakers. Students have trouble in unfamiliar environments, and tension creates a barrier to learning. To break through that tension, I find after basic introductions, subject relevant games are effective.

Second, I like to know their knowledge basis: what they know and what they don't know. Both schools and students come in all shapes and sizes, so at any level there will be things they struggle with, things in which they excel; this creates gaps in knowledge that make learning more difficult. By finding their base knowledge I can help cover these gaps and help them conquer the subjects they have trouble with.

Finally, I find it important to learn about a student's motivations and goals. These are important to both the learning process and habit forming, and help me to cater future lessons to better serve their needs.

I've primarily worked with same-age students, but also younger students for courses in college that I had finished, and even younger in tutoring my siblings. Not everyone has been motivated to learn, but in matching teaching with their goals, I've helped them reach their aims.

As you get higher in education, you'll find that being able to learn things for yourself becomes more and more important. This task is a lot harder than most people think, and can rarely be done on your own. In other words, you are looking for a teacher that will help you learn beyond their lessons, and help you learn how to research and form good study habits.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Part of a teacher's job is helping students figure this out, but some things to think about would be: What are my goals? What am I doing to reach these goals? What am I not doing that I could be doing?

Having these in mind helps teachers form more concrete lesson plans and guide students in the direction that they want to go.
