About Sofia
I am a rising freshman at the Ivy League University of Pennsylvania, majoring in Finance at the Wharton School of Business. I am currently in Multivariable Calculus and earned a 5 on the AP Calculus BC and AB exams last year. I have mastery of all levels of math below Calculus 3.
As for tutoring experience, I tutored on SAT Bootcamp on the subjects of Math and EBR&W for the CollegeBoard and Khan Academy partnership. This is something that the CollegeBoard reached out to me for, as I had earned a score of 1560 on the SAT in the early fall of my junior year in highschool. In addition, I also tutor pre-algebra students at the local middle school and worked as a tutor at my local K-12 Kumon tutoring center during the pandemic. These jobs have helped me acquire a lot of patience and ample explanation skills. I have also learned to create lesson plans tailored to my students' needs.
I love being able to use my resources and knowledge to help others advance. The improvements I see in my students bring me joy.
Given that I am a rising freshman at UPenn Wharton School for Business, I am no stranger to academic rigor, particularly in math as Wharton places a big emphasis on proficiency in calculus.
As for training, I was trained for 2 weeks prior to the SAT Bootcamp run by Khan Academy and the CollegeBoard. I have also had real-life tutoring jobs such as at my local middle school and Kumon tutoring center.

When working with a new student, I always ask them to provide me with a feel for where exactly they are currently. Are they entirely lost and behind their class lessons? Do they need to brush up on material they've already learned? Are they trying to get ahead and learn material before it is taught?
Once this is established, I provide them with preliminary practice problems to evaluate their understanding of the material. I also ask them personally if there are any topics that they feel need reinforcing or reinstruction.
It is only after this process that I am able to create lesson plans for the student.
I have worked with very young children (kindergarten to 5th grade) at Kumon. I have also worked with middle schoolers at both Kumon and the middle school. I have worked primarily with high schoolers, tutoring a group of 27 juniors for the SAT last spring for example. I also work with high schoolers at Kumon in Algebra 2 especially. Some of these students are a part of these tutoring programs because they are genuinely passionate students who wish to get ahead of their school curriculums. Others are there because they are hardworking and wish to improve their grades. I have also worked with some students who are only present because their parents made them. Regardless of the circumstances, I always find a way to keep my students engaged and learning.
Be sure that the teacher has a lot of experience teaching the subject! Also be sure that they have enough personality to encourage you to keep on working (getting tutored can be a bore at times!) and be patient enough to be able to answer your questions (sometimes students shy away from asking questions because they feel that it might annoy the tutor –– there's no such thing as too many questions, especially when you're trying to learn!)
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think not only about your grades in the class but also about your understanding.
Are you at a level where you can explain to another peer or teach another student about the topic? If so, that is mastery. If not, there are ways for you to get there.
Below mastery there are a number of other levels of understanding. Ask yourself questions like: "Am I able to do the homework? How long does it take me? Do I understand my own notes? Do I find myself not picking up on information in class?" to evaluate yourself and diagnose your needs prior to telling the tutor.
