Hey! I am Taylor and I am a junior mathematics student at Colorado State University. I love math and math teaching. I understand that this subject is hard but oftentimes it just takes the right explanation and some practice to become a math pro! I have tutored students since high school and though I am not a certified teacher, I have a passion and a love for communicating math (and trying to make it less scary)

I love teaching people mathematics!

In high school, I started to tutor middle schoolers. Then, as high school progressed, and I started to do well in math competitions some high school counselors would recommend me to students who needed help. Now, in college, I will tutor both my peers and high school students. I tutor because I love explaining math and nothing is better than being paid for doing what one loves.

I am currently a math undergraduate but I ultimately hope to be a professor of mathematics. This means that I do math every day both for my self and to help my peers. I have tutored math in the past and though I am not certified I do have a lot of passion!

About the lesson

First I will get to know you (do you like math? science? engineering? or some other field? What are you passionate about both in and out of academics? Favorite books? etc.) and what your current troubles are in math. Second, we will try to figure out what you know, this is just a process that tells me if you are where you should be in your class and therefore if we just need to practice the subject or if you need to be re-taught a few things.

My sessions should hopefully be far more helpful than just a lecture but will most likely include a lot of practice!!

I have tutored a lot of students. From students who really struggle with math to students who love math so much that they self study and just want a tutor, admittedly the former is far more common and that is absolutely ok. I have not tutored elementary school students.

I would recommend that you look for someone that you think would be fun to work with and could give you a positive experience in the subject. Oftentimes people hate math because of past experiences with the subject or they just find it difficult, and both of these are perfectly ok places to be. However, I would recommend that you look for someone that can show you a side to the subject that you never knew existed and make you just as passionate about the subject as they are. I know that is a lot of vague criteria (and one should, of course, also look for someone capable of increasing the student's grades and stuff) but the best way to get good at a subject is to be so passionate for the subject, that way you study the subject and find it interesting.

In short, find someone that makes math worth learning!

In March, the Putnam competition scores came back from December and I found out that I got a positive score and that was super exciting. (the Putnam competition is a math competition that undergraduate math students sometimes do and it is notoriously difficult. On YouTube, a channel called 3blue1brown does an awesome video on the competition, I recommend you watch it!)

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I will present a list!

1. Think about the specific concepts that are stumping you as well as potential reasons as to why. For example, one could be really stuck on the equation of a line (y=mx+b) and the reason could be that they just don't know why this equation works or what b means.

2. Think about how you learn best! Do you learn best by doing examples? Are there specific ways of explaining math that vibes best with you, i.e. do you learn best when teachers explain things visually and geometrically or through equations?

3. Do you, in your opinion, need to relearn things, that is, have the tutor give you a lesson on the topic or do you need the tutor to go through a lot of practice problems?
