With a background in music education, I can provide quality lessons and tutoring that directly apply to public school curriculum. Not only will your student receive the skills they need to succeed, but they will also be provided with the skills they need to go beyond school.

I've always wanted to be a teacher, and in my path to become a public school music teacher, I wanted to make sure I could continue to play and teach my primary instrument despite my busy schedule. I loved my lesson experience, and I want to make sure that I can retain the intricate knowledge that you get in lessons and pass it on to the next generation of students like me.

I recently graduated with my Bachelor of Music Education from Baldwin Wallace University Conservatory of Music. At the Conservatory, I received rigorous training in all aspects of academic music, and participated in multiple ensembles on my primary instrument. I recieved lessons on my instrument and in chamber groups. Through these experiences, I have training to teach to a wide variety of students, and student groups.

About the lesson

First, I will meet with the student for a half hour to get a sense of the skills they already posses, and what needs work. In this meeting, we will discuss the student's short term and long term goals, what they hope to get out of lessons, and what I can provide as a teacher. Once establishing their needs and goals, we can agree on a lesson duration of 30, 45, or 60 minutes, weekly. I have a contract that students can sign establishing their commitment, as well as outlining their responsibilities and my own responsibilities.

It is also important for a student and teacher to have a good relationship, so we will use this time to get to know each other a little bit and begin to build this relationship of mutual respect.

After this meeting, we will be in contact to schedule a first lesson. Depending on where the student is in their education, I may ask them to prepare something beforehand, but if they are a beginner, it is more likely we will start from scratch without much need for homework.

Between the first meeting and the first lesson, I will put together a curriculum for the student. It will include their goals and assignments, and will be aligned with music teaching philosophies to ensure that the are learning as best as they can at every step along the way. Though it may be difficult to get used to in the beginning for some students, following this curriculum is incredibly beneficial in their learning process. Once a routine is established, it becomes much easiert to follow, and the results can grow exponentially.

Most of my experience is with high school students. However, I am very comfortable teaching beginners on most band instruments. After all, it is part of my job as a public school teacher to do so. I've worked with students of all different skillsets and ages, even helping communit ensembles where the average age is 60 or higher. Not only do I have the training and experience, but I believe that any student has the ability to learn, because I've seen all kinds of students.

For beginner students, I would say to look at how many students are in our band class now. Then think of how many teachers there are. I know from experience as a teacher that it is very hard to teach to every student in the room. We try our best, and the students still manage to make tremendous progress. However, a student with private lessons among a class of 20 without can advance far quicker, and establish themselves as a leader. Music is a very special subject that is different from math or science or reading or writing. Everybody learns music differently, and taking private lessons is a great opportunity to have instruction that best fits you at your learning level.

For middle school students, I would advise them to think of how they hear the high school kids play. Middle school is usually when music starts advancing more quickly, and it takes more work and dedication to keep up. Again, private lessons can help set you up for success in your immediate musical future.

For High School students, I would advise them on my own experiences. I never took lessons before I went to college. As soon as I got there, I wish I had. Natural ability can only take you so far, and once you are down the path of studying music professionally, the work only gets harder. I started very far behind, and I was lucky to be in the position I was in. I spent my breaks and my summers working twice as hard as my classmates just to keep up. Taking private lessons helps prepare you for auditions and bridging the gap between high shcool and college. Had I taken lessons earlier in life, not only would I have been a better player in college, but I probably would have decided that I wanted to pursue music sooner, and I would have taken it more seriously and researched more to set myself up much better for my future.

And if you know you don't want to pursue music as a career, that's fine. However, lessons are a great way to pursue a hobby through life, and many colleges give scholarships, regarless of major, for participating in their music programs. Especially for colleges where an audition is required for these scholarships, having private lessons definitely gives you the upper hand.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What do I want to accomplish on my instrument tomorrow, next week, a month from now, and in a year? I think my students need to have goals, because while private lessons can help you succeed and build stronger skills, it is not an immediate action to make you better at music. A lot of the learning that takes place in lessons comes from learning about yourself.

Even if it's "I want to learn a Bb scale in a week" that is perfectly fine. My job is to take your goals and put you on the path to achieve them.

If you are unsure about your needs, think about the kinds of music you are interested in. Do you like playing classical music, jazz, folk, rock? Do you like playing alone, with 1-5 other people, or with a full ensemble? Do you want to get better at your primary instrument, or learn a completely new one? Music is a very rewarding subject, but it takes self-motivation and determination to earn that reward. Make sure that you are pursuing something you will actually enjoy, but are still comfortable witht he amount of work that will go into it.

$20 - 30 minutes (available to beginners only)

$25 - 45 minutes

$30 - 60 minutes (recommended for most students)

$10/15/20 - Extra lessons (30/45/60 minutes)

$5 - last-minute non-emergency cancelled lessons
