About Carter

My philosophy is that anyone can learn math and science; all they need is the right approach. Therefore, I offer personalized tutoring services for science and math content based on your needs. I aim to keep my rates low and reasonable, as my main concern is for helping my clients learn and feel more comfortable with STEM-based content. In addition, I back up my philosophy with a degree in ecology from the University of Georgia and 5 and a half years of experience in a combination of research, environmental consulting/management, and STEM course teaching.

I thoroughly enjoy talking about and explaining scientific concepts. One, because I have a genuine interest in the content I teach, making instruction less of an occupation and more of an enjoyable activity. This means I will have a smile on my face during instruction and will be more than happy to be flexible with scheduling to make sure we get in all the time you need. Second, and most importantly, I enjoy helping others gather confidence in STEM. the difficulty of math and science tends to scare people away, even if they have genuine interests. But, I like to help people realize that math and science is not always as difficult as it seems, but just needs to be taught in way that works for the student. To me, helping people feel comfortable with math and science is one of the best feelings in the world.

I first started teaching my younger siblings while babysitting them. I found that I enjoyed explaining things and they seemed to appreciate my calm and positive approach to teaching. Once in college, I pursued my love of teaching in parallel with research by obtaining teaching assistant positions with professors that I enjoyed working with.

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Ecology from the University of Georgia, an R1 research institution in Athens, GA. Professionally, I have worked as a teaching assistant for two different biology courses at the University of Georgia, a research technician for both aquatic and soil ecology labs at the University of Georgia, and am currently an Environmental Consultant at an Engineering Firm in Freehold, New Jersey. I have a very diverse background in the field of biology and environmental science and I pride myself on my ability to take complex scientific concepts and make them more palatable to others outside of those fields.

I typically like to take the first meeting to assess my student's needs. What goal are you trying to reach, what type of learner are you, etc. That way, I can tailor lessons to fit your needs. If you are a visual learner, I will set up whiteboards for problems and prepare slides if needed. If you are a tactile learner, I may be able to recommend scientific models of lab exercises that we can perform together. Either way, I like to get greetings and preferences done upfront to make sure you are comfortable moving forward and that we develop attainable goals from the start.

Following the first meeting, I try to set up lesson plans and schedules based on two-week increments.  Every meeting within a two-week period will look roughly the same. After two weeks I will reassess the progress you are making and ask for input from you on any changes that need to be made.

Professionally, I have worked with college-aged kids all the way to adults in the middle of their careers looking to the GRE and go to graduate school.

Find someone that will listen to your needs. Scientists often think that if they just provide the information the student will understand it if they try hard enough. However, its important for both the student and the instructor to understand how a student learns to ensure effective retention of knowledge.

In 2019, I helped instruct a Tropical Ecological Research study abroad class in Costa Rica. During this time, I was not only responsible for assisting students with learning content from the main professor, but I was responsible for helping each student feel comfortable and safe while outside their comfort zone. One moment I was explaining topics in tropical biodiversity and ecological niches, and another moment I was helping students deal with homesickness and giving first aid to blisters.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out

Try to think through what is the current situation you are in and what goals you are trying to achieve. The instructor needs some sort of information from you on where you are starting, why you are having issues, and where you want to be. Before you go to a teacher for help, you should take some time to think about what your actual issues with the content are. There is a big difference between going to a teacher and asking "how do I bring my grade up?" versus "I feel like my grade is suffering because...". I would encourage you to think about what goals you are looking to achieve and self-reflect on where you may need to improve. If you are having difficulty with figuring out the issue, make that known.
