About Hannah

Like many nurses, I have a passion for teaching. Nursing school is undeniably one of the most challenging undergraduate educations that one can pursue - the sheer amount of memorization can make students feel like they're drowning. When I was in school, I felt like I was in over my head every day, but I invested much of my energy into fine-tuning the best way to study for the many diverse areas of nursing explored in a nursing degree.

This interest led me to apply for a position as a student tutor at Newberry College, the institution where I earned my bachelor's in nursing. Most weeks I spent up to 5 hours per night helping a diverse group of overwhelmed nursing students explore their own learning styles and find how they can make their strengths work for them in order to acheive their goals. I learned how individualized learning should be.

I graduated with honors from Newberry in May of 2020 with my BSN, earning the Faculty Award of Excellence in Nursing, and the Palmetto Gold Scholarship. My college journey helped me discover a love of communicating, which caused me to win first place at the South Carolina Speech and Theater Festival in persuasive speaking in 2018, as well as being the guest speaker for the nursing pinning ceremony in 2020. I found my love for critical care nursing, and was hired to the Medical ICU at Lexingtom Medical Center after graduating. I still study and teach every day at my job.

I love the science of nursing, and I love learning with individual students. I learn so much from teaching, and I love being able to research and streamline information to give students the most condensed version possible.

I was nominated by my class in nursing school to apply for a tutoring position at the college's learning center.

About the lesson

I like to assess a student's goals first, discover their learning style, and create a gameplan revolving around what kind of learning helps them the most. Together we identify what's holding them back, whether it's struggling to adjust to nursing style questions, not understanding the material, struggling with memorization, simply feeling overwhelmed and disorganized. I help establish good study habits if need be, and create practice tests to track progress if the student is interested.

I've worked with a variety of nursing students, including brand new nursing students struggling to adjust to their first classes, students who are making the grades but want some extra study aid to fuel their GPAs, as well as adults who are going back to school after taking some time off.

Find someone who listens. There isn'a a magic study method that works for everyone. What works for someone else might not work for you it's about finding out how to use your personal strengths to acheive your goals.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
It helps to know what students feel they are struggling with most. A lot of students come to me because they aren't passing their classes and aren't sure why. It's always helpful when students can identify weak areas in general so we can tailor our sessions and reach goals faster.
