About Graham
Hello! I am Graham and I am a pre-med student who just recently graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. I performed very well in biology-related courses as my time as an undergraduate. These courses included basic biology, biochemistry, microbiology, and biology labs. I received an A in all of these courses. I am also currently studying biology to prepare for the MCAT (medical college admissions test), this has helped me maintain and enhance my biology knowledge. One of my favorite and most successful methods of studying is recording myself teaching the information that I need to know. On numerous occasions, I have sent these recordings to fellow classmates who have told me that my teaching of the information is extremely helpful and presented the information in ways that were more clear than any other resource they had. In my time as an undergraduate student, I found that learning from someone who was recently a student in the same class that you are seeking help from is extremely helpful because they think and work very similarly compared to you.
I enjoy that moment when I can tell that things have "clicked" for a student. I also really enjoy the fact that teaching enhances my knowledge as well, and makes both the student and myself feel more comfortable with the topic at hand. Hearing about the success a student had and how I helped them achieve that is also extremely rewarding.
I was taught at a young age that the best way to learn something is by teaching it. As a student, I did not typically have anyone to teach information to other than myself. So I frequently would record myself teaching as if I had students listening even though I was simply just teaching myself. This method really helped me retain information and become better at teaching.
I graduated with a degree in Nutrition Science and was pre-health with a strong biology background.

To me, building rapport with a student is extremely important. I always want students to be comfortable asking any questions they may have. I think that sometimes students are a bit nervous to ask a question because they may think it is too obvious and would make them look bad. However, sometimes the basic questions are the ones that clear up the most confusion. Overall, my typical process involves understanding the student's strengths and weaknesses, what they do and do not understand, and also assuring them that no matter what their knowledge level is currently at, they will only go up from there!
Fellow classmates in my undergraduate courses.
I would advise them to consider looking into a tutor that has recently had to learn the information, much like what they are currently trying to do. In my experience from learning from tutors and teachers, the ones that were most helpful to me were the ones that had most recently had to go through the same process of learning that I was going through. To me, learning from someone that is super advanced in a subject is sometimes intimating and they are not always as good at teaching things in layman's terms.
I successfully taught my younger sister, who is in high school, a biology unit that she had an exam on the next day. She was very unsure of herself the day before the exam, but I was able to calm her nerves by presenting the information in a concise and easy way to understand. She received an A on the exam and was extremely happy, I was equally happy.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I think students should address what their major concerns are. They should think about what they are most unsure about and most confident about. Most importantly, they should ask themselves what all needs to be addressed and cleared up in order for them to feel good about their upcoming exam, quiz, practical, etc.
