About Gene

I began designing, painting & constructing scenery at age 10 for trade show exhibits, stage productions, television, movies, educational videos and fund raising projects for political, civic, business and various other organizations. While serving in the USAF I began a theater group in Korea as a means of providing entertainment for fellow service men and women. Years later I developed sets for a church Vacation Bible School in South Carolina and decided to write the program as well. As a result I ended up having my own nationally telecast children's show (daily) for a number of years. In 2017 I was offered a large commission by the state of Mississippi Bicentennial Committee to execute a commemorative project to tour the state. I had my art class at our local Boys and Girls Club paint 12 portraits, 4 foot by 4 foot, of famous people from Mississippi. The commission allowed me to reward the youngsters with an all expense paid round-trip flight to Denver, CO for a week. I am, without apology, a free-market capitalist and don't believe in tax support for the visual or performing arts. Part of my classes involve instructions on how to be marketable. One means of accomplishing this is to design and construct puppet stages. Two goals: 1. Performing with puppets helps overcome stagefright, and 2. Students can easily construct their puppet stage, write a play and pefrorm for a paying audience, helping them, once again, learn free-market principles. As an ordained minister I also do a considerable amount of work with churches and ministries nationwide assisting with projects like Vacation Bible Schools, Easter and Christmas programs, Mission programs, Youth programs and fund-raising projects.

I have alway made a distinction between "teaching" and "educating." I am not a "teacher," because in my years of experience I have concluded that far too many teachers stand in front of a class and pontificate, trying to impress students with how much they think they know. On the other hand, educators create an atmosphere of mutual trust where real learning can take place. This has served me well in teaching over the years in three colleges (grad and undergrad), fine arts centers, workshops, . . .

As the Art Director at our local Boys and Girls Club I use my classes as a means of teaching not only art, but life-skills and leadership. Our goal at the club is to provide tomorrow's leaders today. By participating in state-wide projects like I described above, we have put our club on the map!

In high school my freshman year I walked into the office of one of the Administrators, who also happened to be the head of the Drama Department, and told him I wanted to be the set designer. I began by being assigned projects like designing sets for our rather extravigant home comings which included themes like Camelot and even a 1920s Speak Easy theme. With no formal training in scenic design I began leading crews through the steps of designing, painting, and constructing sets. "Sink or swim."

Years and years of real world experience. I grew up in a world where my goals and ambitions were not supported or recognized. I tell people that at age 7 I learned to swim by jumping into 12 feet of water at the local pool. I have jumping into the deep end of the pool my entire life. "Sink or swim." But I do believe in a law of attraction and seen it demonstrated in my life. In third grade I wanted to assist with the scenic elements of our school plays. Mr. Dykas was a professional artist who also did scenery for our school productions. He took me under his wing. By the time I got to high school set design was a passion. I secured a scholarship (actually several) to study architecture at Illininois Institute of Technology in Chicago. There I discovered that I didn't really want to be an architect, but rather a designer. At that time, 1969, I felt guilty being in college on a free ride while friends were being shot at in Viet Nam so I quit college and enlisted in the Air Force.

About the lesson

We begin with a simple cartoon course that I developed years ago for a Children's Hospital in South Carolina as part of an art therapy program.

When youngsters are asked to draw something and they haven't been given some basic information all that results in a frustrated youngster and a pile of crumpled paper of the floor. The goal of lesson one is to simply eliminate that pile of wasted paper and for the student to walk away saying, "I know what I did wrong and I'm learning how to fix it." So the first step is building self-confidence.

In a group setting, which I prefer to private instructions, a group provides an atmosphere of mutual support, edification, encouragement, and empowerment. I offer a 90 minute class one evening a week for 10 weeks. Cost is $100.00 per student. Again, it begins with a simple cartoon class ("Even if you have never drawn a thing in your entire life, you will learn to draw any cartoon animal by the end of lesson 2!"). We move on to drawing the human head, then the human body. Next we move into perspective drawing and then add color, light and shadow.
