Excellent music teacher! My girls absolutely love Mrs.Phelps. She’s always very positive and encouraging to them. Janice brings together an expectation of excellence with the necessary inspiring encouragement for her students. Over the 6 years she has worked with my children, she has challenged them to reach for goals that require hard work, dedication and persistence. Through each of these challenges, she has walked with them step by step through the process, always ready with assistance and a warm smile. She has gone above and beyond to find ways to match each of my children with opportunities that fit their personalities, abilities and vision for how they desire to incorporate music into their lives.

In addition to these qualities, Janice also provides a well rounded approach to teaching music. Woven into her instruction is not just the technical aspect of how to play, but also how music works as well as the history behind the music. By implementing music flash cards, books, CDs, and youtube recordings, her students are exposed to concepts of theory, musical eras, composers, and compositions. The students are immersed not just in the how, but the when the who and the why of music. This is not just helpful in gaining a solid music education, it also allows for reaching students whose learning strengths are widely varied.

Janice truly looks at each of her students as an individual, seeks to understand their strengths and their goals, and actively maps out a plan to help them grow to the best of their potential. I look forward to working with her and her studio for many years to come.

When I was twelve, I started taking private piano lessons from Janice Phelps through her Music Matters Studio. Now a senior in high school, I have grown over the years in the basics of theory, technique, and performance; learned the stories of many incredible composers; taken part in piano class with other students; and played a variety of classical and just fun pieces.

Mrs. Phelps always has a smile and a word of encouragement for her students. She asks about what's going on in our lives outside of lessons, and, as she gets to know each student, she looks for music that she knows we would enjoy playing. Not only that, her high standard of excellence is an inspiration. This year, Mrs. Phelps’s motto for her studio is, “Do Hard Things”. Really, though, this has been a theme she has put forth every year I’ve worked with her. By choosing to tackle challenging pieces and pursue a goal of playing them well, I have grown immensely.

Mrs. Phelps continually reminds her students that music is a gift from God and we want to use this gift to glorify and honor Him. With this goal at the center, everything she does in her studio is done with excellence and encouragement. I'm thankful for all the hard work Mrs. Phelps does to help me learn!

Janice has taught music lessons to my 2 girls for several years now. She has taught them piano, guitar, and violin lessons. My girls adore her and she is strict yet gentle.
