About Tina

After 30+ years of teaching, I have learned that each student is truly an individual therefore no method is one size fits all. My teaching philosophy is to teach to the student, not to the method.

I really enjoy the "light bulb" moments! When a student is flummoxed by a concept and the suddenly the "ah HAH" light switches on and their off and running with a huge smile on their face! Those moments really make my day.

I knew I wanted to teach music the by the end of my freshman year of high school. I started teaching my first private students at a the age of 21 while still working on my undergraduate degree.

My private studio has been established for over 30 years and I spent 15 years teaching middle and high school band. I have performed professionally but my heart lies with working one on one. I have a bachelors degree in music education and performance. I have masters degree in conducting.

About the lesson

The first lesson is predominantly a meet and greet to assess where the student is on their journey. With beginners, I use the lesson as an introduction to their instrument and an overview of practice expectations and studio etiquette.

I have worked with all ages, all stages, from everywhere in the socio-economic spectrum. While I have begun piano students as young as four-years-old, I prefer to start students no younger than eight as they have a better grasp of self-discipline and are better able to absorb the lesson material delivered in a 30-minute lesson.

Look for the teacher that fits your learning style and will guide you with encouragement along your musical path. These are your lessons, not theirs.

One of my former flute students from years ago has just completed her masters in flute performance. She sent me the video from her recent masterclass with renowned flutist, James Galway. I was incredibly proud and so grateful to have been a part of her journey.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What are your personal goals? Are you committed to the time it will take to achieve those goals? The process of learning g a musical instrument is not a sprint, it is a marathon. It take a lot of time and patience; most of all, it takes stick-to-it grittiness because there will be frustration and setbacks along with the progress and success!
