About Curtis

In my studio, I prioritize my students' goals and interests while supporting their musical development with appropriate repertoire, ear-training, sight reading, composition, improvisation, and music theory activities. I teach all ages, levels, and a variety of styles.

I completed my doctorate in piano at the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) and a master's in piano and harpsichord from Indiana University. I studied with important pianists including James Tocco and Edward Auer. During my time at CCM and IU, I received assistantships in Secondary Piano and Music Theory. In fall 2022, I served as an Adjunct Instructor of Piano Pedagogy and Harpsichord at CCM where I taught undergraduate and graduate coursework. This spring 2023, I served as Visiting Assistant Professor of Piano Pedagogy at Oberlin Conservatory of Music. At the University of Missouri, I will serve as Assistant Professor of Piano Pedagogy.

Additionally, I serve as the Manager of Online Publications at the Frances Clark Center for Keyboard Pedagogy, where I assist the organization in creating the highest quality materials to support piano teachers around the world.

If you have any questions about my studio, please reach out to me!

I most enjoy the ways in which I impact students' lives outside of music. I believe piano lessons support healthy development and the learning of a variety of non-musical skills, which can help any person.

I began teaching while I was in high school to try to see if teaching music was something I truly wanted to do for the rest of my life. I started with a handful of young students and over the last few years, this has turned into a flourishing set of students ranging from beginners to advanced and young to old.

Doctor of Music - Piano Performance at University of Cincinnati (CCM) - Graduated in December 2021, GPA: 4.0

Master of Music - Piano Performance and Early Music Harpsichord Indiana University - Graduated July 2018 GPA: 4.0

Bachelor of Music - Piano Performance Indiana University - Graduated May 2015 GPA: 4.0

About the lesson

When I first start working with a new student, I like to spend a few lessons getting to know them and their interests. My main objective when working with any student is to inspire a love and passion for music. I work together with students to find repertoire that suits their personal interests and helps them to progress.

I work with all kinds of students. I have taught beginning to advanced level students. In my approach, I adapt my teaching to the needs and abilities of the student. Regardless of preceived talent or ability level, I am happy to help inspire a love and passion for music.

I think that it is essential to find a teacher whose personality, goals, and approach works for you. Make sure to contact several teachers and determine how their educational background, teaching experience, and goals can help you.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Why do I want to learn to play the piano? How will playing the piano help improve my lifestyle? How long do I expect to enroll in piano lessons? What do I hope to get out of piano lessons?

Curtis has been a wonderful teacher for my son. The progress that my son made over the past year with Curtis was phenomenal. They both interacted well and Curtis knew exactly what my son liked and steered him towards that and at the same time encouraged him to learn other genres as well. Curtis and my son developed a great connection which I hope continues in future. Curtis is a positive and passionate piano teacher.
