About Emily

Instruction is for students who play piano at all levels, from age five

Music instruction is comprehensive. Students receive theory and listening training which improves musicianship and sight reading abilities, and promotes life-long enjoyment of music performance. Students study piano technique and literature.

Instruction is available in person and through online video conferencing.

Some former long-term students are engaged in professional music careers.

Certified, advanced professional music teacher in Maryland.

Bachelor's and Master's degrees in music and many graduate credit hours in piano performance, choral performance, and music education.

Membership in professional music teacher organizations in Maryland state, and in Frederick County, Montgomery County, and Carroll County provides students with advancement and performance and service opportunities.

Bachelor of Music In piano performance, Master of Arts in music, and many hours of graduate-level training in music education, music history, performance, and theory.

I enjoy and appreciate working with students who share an interest in music, want to play piano very well, and want to learn to think as musicians do for a lifetime.

I enjoy seeing music students grow and flourish, and helping them see what they can accomplish to their greatest abilities.

The outstanding teachers with whom I studied from a very early age, and the tremendous support of my parents and musician friends, were the best encouragement to begin teaching.

* Many hours of post-graduate music education and keyboard study including piano, pipe organ, and harpsichord

* Applied music study, performances at the professional level from church basements to onstage at The Kennedy Center

* Over 40 years of teaching piano and piano/sight singing theory

About the lesson

When a new student begins studying with me I assess what the student already knows about music, and what styles of music the student is interested in playing. I also assess the student's physical ability to play and if any special accommodations need to be addressed.

There are students of all ages and abilities interested in learning piano. I have taught people of all ages and from many different backgrounds how to play the piano for their own enjoyment or as part of their professional goals.

Those who engage me for the longest period of time have been those who are most interested in and who have the willingness to try to follow instruction and work toward their musical goals.

1. Hire a piano teacher who has had professional training and who regularly performs professionally

2. Hire a piano teacher whose students enjoy playing the piano and who play well

3. Hire a piano teacher who wants students to have strong musicianship, and not merely play the correct notes with the correct fingers

* Students who perform happily and well at recitals

* Students who enjoy participating in piano festivals

* Students who enjoy composing music, including one student who published a piece of music for computer with keyboard

* Students who perform at school, and are asked by their school music teachers to perform due to the ability of the students

* Students who enjoy performing for family and friends and tell me how much the family enjoyed hearing the students play

* Elementary-aged students who learn to match pitch when they sing

* One high school student tutored by me for more than one year and who achieved the highest score on AP Music Theory

* Students who, after much effort, finally play challenging pieces of music very well, and they know it!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Learning to play a musical instrument requires commitment. Will the student have adequate time to prepare for lessons?

The student should have an instrument sufficient for study. Does the student have a piano or a keyboard with touch control?

For children, it is important that the child desires learning to play the piano.
