About Kaitlyn

I began playing piano 6 years ago. Quickly I picked up my own sense of style and found my skill. I learned from one of the best teachers and believe that she has made me the pianist I am today! As a teacher, I believe I stand out because of my ability to connect to my student and listen to their wishes and capabilities. Not only do I try my best to teach someone how to play, I also believe strongly in teaching someone how to love piano and find their own passion for it. In general, I am a very flexible person too. Anywhere from coming to my house for lessons, going to the students, or listening to my student’s requests like type of music, I try to listen to them.

I began teaching just last year. The main reason is I believe I’ve gotten to a point where I need to take the next step. To me, the best thing I could do is share my experience and passion with other people.

I myself am a high school student, so I don’t have any official certifications in piano. However, I have been playing for six years and have gotten to a place where I am teaching myself musical compositions and starting to even compose my own. In a sense of music theory and history, I try to teach myself in the time I have to expand my comprehension of music.

About the lesson

Generally, I enjoy working with beginners. So when I meet my student for the first time, I believe the most important thing is getting to know them first. I want to make sure that they feel comfortable with me and that they understand my process. First, I will see what the student knows about piano. Whether or not they know a little bit or don’t even know where to begin allows me to create a lesson plan. For beginners I use very popular lesson books that I myself and many others began with and branch my own teachings from that. From there, I base our lessons off of how the student is progressing and where they’re at.

Preferably, I like to work with beginners. Being a younger teacher myself, I think that gives me the ability to connect with young students.

One thing I would advise is to make a wise decision. A lot of piano teachers are very skillful, however choosing a teacher with the best rating or certifications isn’t always the best option. I learned this with my piano teacher. She wasn’t that big nor was she very expensive, but I was able to connect to her and learn at a very proficient rate. In fact, once we had gotten through one level of the books we were on, I told her I was ready for the big guns. Being the person she is, she listened and we began Für Elise. This is key because I believe being a teacher is also about listening to your students and believing in them.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
An important question to ask yourself is what are you capable of. I know that a lot of students are either being pressured by parents or are expecting too much out of lessons. As a teacher, I try my best to teach a student, however it’s important to know what you can handle. Some people are fast learners and pick up on things, but some take time to learn things and that’s okay.

Details

Generally I charge based off of the student’s schedule and their lesson time frame. I charge a minimum of $20 per lesson which usually starts around 45 minutes to an hour based on age.
