About Antonio

I am a travelling music teacher, so I teach music lessons at my students' homes. This adds an element of convenience for my customers, especially those with busy schedules. I have also found students, -especially very young ones- are more comfortable learning at their homes than at some music school or studio.

I have been teaching piano, guitar and bass over the course of the past 20 years to students of all levels and musical interests. I pride myself on developing an individualized teaching method for each student while incorporating ear training, sight reading, and music theory into the instruction to create well-educated musicians.

In 1998 I graduated from Berklee College of Music, in Boston, Massachusetts. I have extensive live performance and studio recording experience in the Boston, Nashville, Mexico City, New Jersey, and New York City areas. My performances and recordings have covered a variety of styles such as R&B, Latin, Pop, Rock, Reggae and Jazz, among others.

I have performed and recorded with drummer Antonio Sanchez, pianist/flute player Oriente Lopez (formerly of the group Irakere) and alto saxophone sensation Miguel Zenon, among many others. My playing is featured on the independently released CD’s of various singer-songwriters. Two of the recordings where I have performed have been nominated for a Latin Grammy.

I am also a published songwriter and a member of ASCAP. My music has been used on TV on programs such as "One Life to Live' and "The District".

I am currently available for private instruction. I currently teach in South New Jersey, around the Moorestown, Mount Laurel, Cinnaminson, Cherry Hill, Marlton, Merchantville and Voorhees areas.

I am also fully bilingual in Spanish and English.

How did I get started in teaching music?

A colleague and former music college classmate of mine had been teaching for a while, and in conversation he told me he thought I would enjoy this type of work and would be good at it. So, I went to a local music lesson studio and talked to the owner who agreed to rent me one of his rooms for teaching.

After that, it has been learning by trial and error, seeing which things work and which do not, as well as getting ideas from other music teachers and instructors.

I would say about 2/3 of my students have been young children, between the ages of 5 and 12, on the piano. The rest is a mixture of children, teenagers and adults studying either piano or guitar, -or even both instruments.

On the extremes, I once had an 86 year old student and I have also had two 3-year old students and a few 4-year olds, but they are rare.

Occasionally I will have a bass student. I was a bass major in college, so this is an area which I know very well, however, I do not get as many requests for bass lessons as I do for piano or guitar, so that has been my main focus, and I have studied both instruments myself since childhood.

Why do I do what I do?

When I see a student who masters something new, a new skill or a new musical piece and he or she has this 'I can't believe I just did that' face...it is just priceless! People of all ages amaze themselves when they realize they are capable of doing things they never thought possible. I love watching my students grow and improve their musical skills. I love what I do!

My teaching philosophy.

I feel every student is unique, so I adapt my teaching to each student. I do not expect my students to be perfect. I simply expect them to make their best effort, whatever that may be. I encourage them to improve in a way which is challenging without being overwhelming.

Ask how many years of experience do they have? Do they hold a degree in music? Which methods do they use? Do they teach strictly classical music or are they open to teaching other styles? Can they provide references? Do they offer trial lessons?

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
For most students determining what their needs are is very difficult. They can express wanting to learn an instrument, or a particular style. But the teacher is really who will determine what a student needs to work on to achieve the desired goals. Having said that, a student needs to understand learning an instrument does not happen overnight. It takes years of consistent practice, of making mistakes and learning from them, of sometimes getting frustrated and having to try many times before being able to master something. A student will need to commit to practicing. Otherwise, taking lessons is basically a waste of time and money. Daily practice is necesary, but what's most important is not how much you practice, but rather, how often. Repetition is key. You'll get more out of doing many short sessions than one long practice session.
