About Emily
I teach all ages and all levels! My greatest joy is helping my students find passion in what they are working on and I help my students enjoy their music more by helping them understand it as I weave music theory education into their normal lessons. I have my Bachelor's degree in piano performance and am currently earning my Master's degree in Collaborative Piano. I start teaching lessons to students as young as 5 years old.
I love music and sharing that passion with others. My favorite thing about teaching is that we get to go on a journey together to discover the music you are learning and find true enjoyment in it. I get to do this with all ages and I love the different views of the music that we can discover. I have over 4 years of private teaching experience and over 17 years of performance experience.
I started teaching while I was a student at Wayne State as a way to work through college and use my music knowledge to help other people. What I discovered was that teaching is one of my greatest passions and my FAVORITE part of music!
I have been playing piano for almost 18 years and have my Bachelor's degree in Piano Performance from Wayne State University, where I studied with Dr. Robert Conway, keyboardist for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. I am currently pursuing my Master's degree in Collaborative Piano at Michigan State University where I study with department head Zhihua Tang. While at Wayne State, I developed significant performance and accompaniment experience. I was the Concerto Competition winner at Wayne State in 2013 and was hired by the Detroit Symphony and the Detroit Choral Society several times as rehearsal accompanist.

I love meeting new students! The first lesson usually consists of some friendly conversation so that I can know the student a little better. I like to know your interests, your passions, and goals for your music lessons. If you have had music lessons in the past, we review what you've learned and play through some of the music you've learned previously to make some clear goals of what to work on next. If you are new, that's great too! We start with the basics and move at a pace that makes you comfortable!
I have worked with students as young as 3 and as old as 85 of all walks of life. If the student is willing to learn, I am eager to teach.
It is important that the student and teacher connect to some extent on a personal level. By this I mean that both should feel comfortable in the lesson so that the student feels willing to ask questions and the lesson is enjoyable for everyone. It is also important that you find a teacher who has the experience necessary to help you with your musical needs.

Details
Typically, lessons are $60/half hour lesson. If you are interested in longer lessons, we may discuss that after we first have a few lessons to determine the best options. I do run new student specials. Currently, new students will receive a voucher that covers 50% of the first month's lessons. Also, students with a valid high school or college ID currently receive a discount on half hour lessons.
