About Anita

I am a permanently certified, experienced NY State Music Educator, currently employed as an elementary school band director in Mt. Vernon Public Schools. In addition I am a professional composer/conductor of music for my own NYC-based jazz orchestra and other large ensembles. In my private teaching I specialize in starting beginners and expanding intermediate players' experiences on piano, band instruments and guitar. I like to encourage all school-aged students to participate in the NYSSMA Solo & Ensemble Festival each spring.

My students all use a management book I authored entitled The Music Students Companion. It assists the student, teacher and parents in the student's navigating their journey through musical studies. It has space for weekly assignments, daily practice minutes log, informative readings in simple language, foundational worksheets in theroy and composition and a place to list repertoire.

My method of teaching brings composition and ear training into the mix. In this regard I believe young musicians become empowered and learn about the concept of "intellectual property" from first-hand experience. I love to see the joy in a child's face when they create original music and it really hits them that they own it because they imagined it, and that if anyone wants to record it, they have to negotiate a price with them!

I also love to help children grasp the basics of musical notation so that they can get comfortable with reading new music at their level. Such a foundation stays with them for life and gives them a sense of having a solid point of departure when building upon that foundation.

Integrating simple improvisation into music theory and ear training is something I like to offer to all my students.

I feel it's important to understand why each student is scheduing lessons in order to set goals with them, or their parents, in order to design a plan that balances learning foundational basics as well as what they personally want to learn.

When I was 6 years old, the neighborhood kids seemed to want me to teach them a song, so I did!

I hold Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Music Education and am a permanently certified Music Educator in the State of NY. My experience as an educator spans K-12 General and Instrumental Music in public, private, parochial and community arts schools. I've taught group lessons on piano, guitar and songwriting as well as Music Appreciation, Music Theory and Jazz Composition & Arranging at the undergraduate and graduate college levels.

From 1995 to 2003 I was a contributing Fellow in the prestigious BMI Jazz Composers Workshop in NYC. I founded my frist jazz orchestra with two colleagues in 1997, and founded Anita Brown Jazz Orchestra in 2000. We have performed at a number of metro New York venues including professional conferences for music education.

About the lesson

I like to start out by asking the student to play something for me. In the event they do not have any experience I ask them what kind of music they like and what their goals are. I go on to explain that I like to keep a balance of "the stuff we all need to learn to get better at playing our instrument, and the stuff we love to play."

I have worked with many, many different kinds of students: beginners from age 4 to 50; intermediate level players who want to prepare a NYSSMA solo and advanced players who seek college audition preparation. One student told me he wanted to be a rock n roll guitarist and came to me to learnt o read piano because he wanted to be well-rounded. That student has held the guitar chair on the Saturday Night Live Band for at least 6 years.

A teacher with credentials and experience in various settings are important points to seek. Look for someone who is capable of changing their teaching style and content as your child grows.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students shouldn't need to think through anything before speaking to teachers about their needs. They should feel free to ask whatever questions they need answered. In searching for a teacher however, it may be helpful to think about what their personal goals are in order to express that to potential teachers.

Details

I offer a minimum of 45-minute lessons and also offer 60 minute lessons. I do not split 60-minute sessions between two students, but often split an hour between piano and a band instrument for interested students.

My rate for a 45 minute session in your home is $70; for an hour it is $90.

A travel fee of $10 per visit may apply, depending on your location.

Fees are due and payable at the beginning of the month for the whole month in cash.
